History
is Being Made... It is plain to see the progression from FFV up to FFVIII. From FFV & FFVI we are able to glimpse early ideas and concepts that would later become major innovations in RPG games. From the "job" concept of FFV (which would be later used to perfection in Final Fantasy Tactics) to the "Esper" magic system that would evolve into the Materia system in FFVII, we are seeing these little snippets and sparks of ideas coming to fruition. Even the menu system, while a bit crude, will be immediately familiar and comfortable to FFVII & FFVIII gamers. Interestingly enough, in FFVI I found Biggs and Wedge from FFVIII still up to no good. Of course the one constant character that appears to be carried through the FF universe are the Chocobo's. Battle
System Alert..! From the options menu you are given the choice in both games of choosing an active battle or "wait" mode battle. Once again, the battle system will be immediately familiar to Final Fantasy players. Each players has to charge up their "health bars" before being allowed to issue an attack command. In FFV it looks as though there is even a "summon" command. Depending on what job you choose for each characters will also depend on what types of magic and weapons you will use. The capability of being able to experiment and mix and match abilities give gamers a wide open field of options to choose from. A similar battle mode is used in FFVI but the attacks are primarily magic based and with each new discovery of Esper, gamers will be able to ultimately use over ninety different types of magic spells. The battles are rather crude are far as the animation sequences go, with FFVI getting the edge over FFV in detail, but yet they still mange to generate a nice bit of tension and excitement. Yesterday
or Today..? Overall, I cannot honestly say that these games are going to compare very favorably to the newer Square RPG's as far as the graphics and overall presentation go. What does keep up though are the stories which appear to be just as engrossing and involving as ever and after all isn't that what playing RPG's is all about anyway? FFV & FFVI look like they are going to be a really great blast from the past and should delight fans of the genre everywhere.
