Rapid Review
Bubble Bobble brings together for the first time two classic games on one disc; the original arcade classic, Bubble Bobble, and it's popular sequel, Rainbow Island. Also included on the disc is an enhanced version of Rainbow Island that has slightly improved graphics but essentially identical gameplay. Bubble Bobble is a 100 level platform game where the players assume control of Bub and Bob, the friendly multi-coloured dinosaurs from the original game, solving puzzles and progressing through mazes by defeating 'baddies' using colour bubbles. Rainbow Islands is played on vertical scrolling levels in a race against the clock as your island is sinking into the water. Your weapon is a rainbow that can be used to either blast your enemies or provide a platform to help escape the rising tide. There are 25 levels to ascend with each providing a selection of enemies and bosses to slow your progress. These two games are essentially very basic platform adventures, the graphics and sounds are very basic but it's the gameplay that will keep people interested. The disc contains identical ports of the original games Bubble Bobble and Rainbow island.
Comment
This release seems to be riding on the crest of the 'trend' to release really old games, Bubble Bobble was an arcade game released by Taito on 1986, and as such is looking extremely old compared to the modern fleet of awesome looking games. However, it's obviously not the graphics that will get people playing these games and if you were a fan of the original arcade version this will make a pleasant trip down memory lane. If you've never heard of or seen Bubble Bobble or Rainbow Island you're probably better off spending you money on something else.
