In search of new and exciting racing formats, developers are 
introducing us to these new breed of racing games that takes 
you off the main drag and onto the beaten path. Both Gremlin, 
with Hardcore 4X4, and Psygnosis, with Monster Trucks, have 
attempted to coax the speed fanatics among us to get out the 
step ladder and climb on board for a bumpy ride in these mega 
trucks. Now Eidos have teamed up with Accolade from USA to offer 
the player to challenge the wicked terrain in four distinct 4X4 
vehicles: the Hummer, Land Rover Defender 90, Jeep Wrangler 
and the Chevrolet K-1500 Z71. So strap yourself in and get 
prepared for a bumpy ride as Eidos brings the excitement of 
off road racing with Test Drive Off-Road which is part of the 
aging Test Drive series which debuted on the Commodore

Test Drive Off-Road's high speed 3D engine allows the driver 
the freedom to bound along one of the twelve available tracks 
or take the opportunity to freely explore the off-track scenery 
as you seek out the short cuts that will help you to reach the 
finishing post as number one. Initially you can race 6 tracks, 
with a further 6 opening up as you progress. Each track allows 
you to drive any route you choose between the starting line and 
the finishing post although checkpoints must be passed in numerical 
order. The game also offers accurate, authentic driving physics 
and incredible speed, giving the player the most realistic off-road 
driving experience possible.

Each of the tracks offers a wide range of environments that includes 
dirt roads, sand tracks, rocky regions and snow bound courses. 
The game also includes a selection of varied weather conditions 
that will affect your vision and handling, the sow is slippery, 
the dirt is bumpy and the desert is deserted.

The gameplay offers two tournaments, a mixed league against three 
other types of vehicle or a head to head against vehicles of a 
similar class.

Comment

A excellent off roader that is slightly spoilt by some 
annoying pop-up. The cars look great and they move so quick and 
smooth with some nice jumps thrown in.
