Playability: If you never experienced Army Men 3D then I would recommend a gentle stroll through the Bootcamp. In fact you best all check this out because there have been a few minor changes in control. Basically it's a practice mode in which the player can try out all weapons, drive an armored vehicle and get to grips with the joypad. There are no real enemies to face, only cardboard cut-outs, so fear not. Control of Sarge is all-important, as your green plastic life will depend on it. He can dash across open terrain, dive for cover behind a rock, roll quickly out, shoot a few rounds and then side scroll back behind the rock to avoid incoming fire. Crawling forwards or backwards allows Sarge to sneak up on enemy camps and take out a few sentries before charging into their base firing off rounds, lobbing grenades and causing all sorts of mayhem. Once dismissed from Bootcamp a full-blooded campaign is the order of the day so "get out that pit you 'orrible little man" and prepare for some real action. The 14 missions are divided into three acts with up to 5 separate objectives in each. These range from simple tasks such as reaching a specific location or trailing spies, to the more involved objectives of rescuing captives from a heavily fortified enemy base and escorting them back to your landing zone. Permanently on screen is a radar map that highlights targets and enemy positions in the near vicinity. This is all the warning you will get, as the Reconnaissance call up is no longer available. Sarge begins with a standard issue rifle but upgrades of firepower can be collected. These are scattered across each level usually hidden in crates containing goodies such as flamethrowers, rocket launchers, sniper rifles, hand grenades and mine detectors. In total there are thirteen weapons with magnifying glasses, spray cans, and skyrockets adding a whole new dimension to warfare. Health power ups are also available in various quantities. Should you come across an army vehicle then feel free to climb on board and fire away but generally military hardware is a little more scarce than the last game. Moving through the game each mission becomes harder and more involved. Unfortunately the save feature can again only be used at the end of a mission, so one slip and it's all the way back to the start. To counteract this there are three difficulty levels. Army Men Sarge's Heroes is an enjoyable romp, but I cannot help feeling that something has been lost in the transition from the first game. On many of the levels the camera angle is a little too over sensitive producing a quite nauseating effect, especially when using the analog directional stick. I also found some of the elements of gameplay that were beyond my control very frustrating. For example one lengthy scenario involved helping Gunner Thick to escape captivity. Once released he immediately charges directly into enemy reinforcements and duly gets shot. Thick? Dead Thick! Surely the inclusion of an order button that controlled his time of approach would have been beneficial. It worked in Army Men 3D. On the positive side the two player split screen mode is far superior over the original offering much more multi-player mayhem. Game Options: This is a 1 disk game for 1-2 Players. It is compatible with the standard (digital) joypad and the analog stick controls of the dual shock joypad. Games can be saved via memory card (1 block per save). |
