Setting the Scene:

The original Army Men 3D quietly sneaked up on us as it surprisingly turned out to be one of last years better action games. It looked and felt just like you were actually playing with plastic soldiers and toy tanks undertaking a series of missions that even John Rambo would have struggled to survive. Army Men 3D gave an insight into what would happen if Action Man should come to life and began using 'real' bullets among varied and treacherous terrain.

Continuing the epic battles between the Green and Tan plastic soldiers, Army Men Air Attack takes combat to the skies with the vaunted Air Cavalry. An all-new hero Captain William Blade leads the Air Cavalry in a new series of campaigns where they join up with Sarge, the hero of other Army Men games. Together you will fight in the air and on the ground to rescue POWs, to extract wounded allies, to sabotage enemy plans, and most importantly, to fight the evil Tan nemesis.

Sound and Vision:

The intro begins with the now traditional Army Men public information film. The Green Plastic News is a take off the old WW2 Pathe News reels and neatly combines pre-rendered colorful images with crackly, black and white plastic war footage. The newsreader really gets right into the part and his extra effort turns the opening movie into a resounding success.

The visual difference between this title and the last army men adventure is immediately obvious as the depth of color is now truly stunning. Every item of terrain and all moving 3D objects have been smoothly sculptured from seamless polygons providing a highly detailed and richly cultivated battleground. Occasional scenery does gradually appear as you move forward but this doesn't seem to affect the gameplay and generally pop-up is kept to a minimum.

Also evident is that the graphics now race along in a much higher resolution. Unfortunately this brings back that growing issue where some members of the gaming public suffer from vision problems. I hope not too many will be affected by the constantly moving high-res animations, because the overall effect is stunning. Personally I was fine and felt no ill effect, although prolonged play did make my eyes tire quickly. But a mate couldn't bare to look at the screen without feeling queasy, so it maybe worth running the game prior to purchase.

There are several styles of environment. Our World is the real world where Captain and the Air Cavalry explore a toy-scaled environment. Their World is the homeland of the Army Men and a world where plastic is the most important resource. These cover six playing areas including Beach, Campground, Arctic, Backyard, Alpine, and Playground.

The visual effects are fairly impressive with large flak trailing from each bullet fired and multi-colored explosions resulting from a direct hit with a missile. When conflict reaches it's most volatile point the screen almost glows with the sheer amount of lighting effects on display at one time.

The sound effects are not as realistic as those heard in the original Army Men title. Yeah, there's lots of bangs and crashes but the attention to detail seems missing leaving just a collection of noise. The military background music seems to take center stage this time around and is constantly booming out in time with the action.
