Setting the Scene

Movie tie-ins with the games world are becoming common place. In the past we have seen Street Fighter, Alien Trilogy, and the Die Hard series to name but a few. Next year we can expect Independence Day and Batman Forever.

Casper is based on the top film release of the same name, which took more than a few bucks at the box office. Now lets get this clear before we start, Casper is for KIDS, nothing wrong with that, and there will be a certain appeal to some adults, but it has been predominately made to occupy the kids on a Sunday morning when you want to grab an extra hour in the pit.

Genre

A tidy intro flows straight into the game itself, which is a sprawling RPG adventure game, and Casper features a steady learning curve leading into a massive playing area.

Graphics

The animations are clear and colorful, rather than spectacular, but the graphics have their own cute appeal featuring plenty of interesting and varied locations.

Sounds and Effects

The music is not really Caspers strong point, but is atmospheric enough. Neither are the sounds, as Casper doesn't really say much throughout the game.

Playability

Cast as Casper, you are set a task which must be carried through to proceed and eventually complete the game. In the first level, Casper is informed that Kat and her father have moved into his house and you must guide him to find both of them a house-warming present, or else he may scare them away. Cute. Completing each task, entails searching around the house until the correct object has been found.

You will have to overcome a number of obstacles, such as locked doors, where a key must be found. Finding the key is easy enough, while a puzzle element is included which usually involves moving objects around and using certain items in conjunction with others. There's not much chance of getting lost or stuck but, as I mentioned earlier, this game is for kids so get back to your Resident Evil, and this will keep the younger players in touch with the game.

Casper has a few tricks up his sleeve to help him overcome any obstacles in his way. He can float high and low, allowing him access to those out of reach places. He can turn into smoke and squeeze through the air vents. He can carry an abundance of objects, but unfortunately cannot walk through walls, which is just as well, as most kids I know would float straight to the finish.

You will begin the game with 100 health points and infinite lives, but you will eventually come across Caspers three evil uncles who will try their best to stop him in his tracks by breathing deadly toxins and spitting at our poor ghoul. Fortunately, there is fruit and food littered throughout the game which will replenish his health when scoffed.

As the game progresses, Caspers uncles become more and more desperate to halt him, so the inclusion of a memory card facility, is helpful.

Value for Money

Casper should keep the kids happy for quite some time. If you loved the movie, you'll enjoy the game. The graphics and sounds are OK but not spectacular.

I cannot say that I played this game to death, but I enjoyed a lie in bed on Sunday while the kids played it.
