Typical of all RPG type games some of you may find the control system a bit fidgety. If not tricky then certainly confusing as there are multiple combinations of all buttons to familiarize yourself with. For example the jump button when held down offer a high leap, or this turns into a long jump when combined with the d-pad. Pressing both the jump and attack buttons together give... you guessed it... a jumping attack. Or with the aid of the directional button a long jumping attack. Okay, so you don't need to be Einstein, but once the weapon and spell menus fill up there's an awful amount of stop/starting to the gameplay.

It all begins back in the dungeons where Celestia, your bozz-eyed guide appears amid a cluster of twinkling blue lights to explain a few of your moves and abilities. Suddenly a weedy looking creature enters the cell and Celestia suggests a spell is fired at him. Of course he couldn't simply be turned into a toad... Oh no! A huge glowing ball of flame the size of a meteorite must be launched towards the sparrow-like weakling exploding into a blinding flash of light upon impact. Nice effects... a bit over the top... but I think he died! Strangely enough the next creature faced looked very similar in all forms but it takes two blasts of the Fire Storm to destroy. Tough cookie... huh?

Fighting his way through the maze of dungeons Drake will eventually reach the Citadel via a strange flying shell. The incessant fighting finally stops as Drake seeks out the Queen to receive his next quest. Now rather than walk into the Citadel, get the next task, walk out of the Citadel again to get on with the game you are then subjected to a meaningless runaround. Again... classic RPG. Pass one soldier and he will give you something for his brother. Run to the far end of the Citadel to pass this item on and you get another object to take back to another relative... who just happens to be at the location you wandered through five minutes ago. What is Drake meant to be? A Crusader of Might and Magic, or a postman for all and sundry. I'm sure you get the idea, but by this time my patience was beginning to wear thin.

The gameplay then meticulously follows the tried and trusted formula. Fight creature. Kill creature. Gain potions that heal and make stronger spells, enabling bigger creatures to be destroyed. What a pleasant world we live in. There's dozens of monsters with a wide variety of special abilities spread across 5 distinct worlds with multiple levels and quests.

In summary if this type of game be the magical potion that turns you on, then please go ahead and help yourself to some. Me? I prefer lobbing hand grenades into the Russian encampment.

Staff Opinions
Martin  "Crusaders of Might and Magic is a game that attempts to combine third person action with role playing elements. It's been done before with Excalibur 2555AD and Deathtrap Dungeon, only better.

What you basically get is a lone crusader who one second is thrashing and splashing his way through a legion of beasties, then barely a few moments later is running trivial errands for the palace guards. Imagine Conan the Barbarian doing that? I don't think so!"
