Playability:
You could be fooled into thinking
that gameplay takes on the usual Beat-em-up format when first visiting
the option screen but the story mode is quite unique. It's basically a
cinematic presentation in which several different characters are used
instead of the same one repeatedly. Although the voice acting won't win
any awards, the story mode should hold your attention throughout.
Standard game modes are also available including Practice, 1 Player
Battle, Vs, Team Battle, Time Attack, Story Mode and Endurance.
Difficulty can be set from easy to hard with a further option to select
the number of rounds required for a win and an adjustable time limit for
each bout. There is also a handicap system which is useful when
mismatched competitors square up in a two player battle.
Once in combat the reaction from each button pressed on the joypad
depends on how close to an opponent you are. Magic attacks are used from
a distance while hand to hand combat occurs at close range.
If standing near by then the face buttons will
throw a combo of punch's and kicking actions. Move further away and they
will switch into three varying magical attacks. There are also
buttons for jumping, guarding and dashing actions.
Tactics definitely come into the gameplay. Since
movement is unlimited, run as far away as you like or get up close and
personal. Either way, you will be able to do some serious damage.
Also by using the buttons in different combinations, even the most
novice players can play right away, while more advanced players will be
able to plan more than they ever have before.
Destrega boasts a cast of 12 unique characters. There's a mixture of
male and female fighters, although I'm sure that the dishy Gradd will be
popular with the gals and the buxom Milena with the guys. None of them
would really stand out in a crowd (except maybe Couger who reminded me
of Voltro in Soul Blade) and in fact could easily be cast in your
average RPG. If you are interested a full profile of each character is
available in the extra options menu.
Generally
the gameplay is quite intense, but it gets boring rather quickly. You
see once a successful strategy has been found,
the computer controlled character can't seem to do much to combat
against it. This makes it possible to win repeatedly using the
same tried and trusted techniques. Of course playing with two human in
control should remedy this problem.
