Playability:

As previously explained Die Hard Trilogy 2 combines three different genres within the one game. These are split into three separate modes of play. Practice, Arcade and Movie.

Practice driving is a single level race against the clock where targeted cars must be rammed off the road and bombs collected before being defused. Practice adventure involves the rescue of all hostages and the elimination of all enemies in a single building. Practice shooter takes you for a first person tour around the shooting range where pop-up enemy targets must be mown down with efficiency.

The Arcade shooter may be played with either analog or digital pad, but for best effects a light-gun peripheral should be used. The directional buttons (or left stick) move the cross hair around the screen, face buttons are used to fire, center cross-hair and launch a high explosive that clears all of the enemies on screen. Shoulder buttons will reload your gun and select weapon. If you have never played this type of game before you will instantly get the picture as soon as the level begins. Shoot everything that moves and most things that don't, but avoid taking out innocent civilians. Initially you begin with a standard hand-gun but shooting items of scenery will reveal many power-ups. Shooting it again will collect the item and add it to your inventory. Power-ups include high explosive grenades, shotguns, machine gun, rocket launcher, a shield to offer temporary protection and the inevitable extra health. It's fast, furious action all the way.

The Arcade adventure is a third person shoot-em-up where the player must guide McClane through a multi-story building rescuing hostages along the way. Enemies are everywhere and to help get you through there is a multitude of ammo, weapon upgrades and health scattered all around. Most rooms may be entered by kicking in the door McClane style, while a switch must be found to open up other areas of the level. There's nothing too difficult within the gameplay as it sticks close to the successful formula from the original game.

The Arcade driving game is the worst of the bunch. The graphics are bad enough, but the handling is atrocious. It feels as if you are trying to control a block of wood rather than a high-speed car and the brakes are either all or nothing. Even when using the analog stick steering is almost impossible, which is crazy considering the gameplay usually involves high-speed chases against another vehicle, or racing through the streets of a busy town against the clock. The sad thing is that kids will persevere and put up with this bad programming because it's 3 for the price of 1.

Finally the Movie mode combines all three games to provide a story-driven adventure with cinematic sequences where you move seamlessly from one style to another as the story unfolds. It's a brilliant idea. Just a shame you have to plough through the driving game sections.

Game Options:

This is a 1 disk game for 1 Player. It is compatible with the standard (digital) joypad, the analog stick controls of the dual shock joypad and various light-guns. Games can be saved via memory card (1 block per save).

Martin  "I dare say that if you loved the original Die Hard game then this will probably be right up your street. Gameplay is very similar, slight improvement graphically, but overall more of the same. The only real let down is the driving game, which plays like a lump of lard."
