Setting the Scene

Well this is the game that really pushed 3D strategy/shoot-em-ups firmly in the face of just about every computer owning gamer around the globe and a welcome addition to the PlayStation format it is too!

You have been transported to hell its-self in order to prevent the demonic hordes from taking over the earth. Every new area that you visit is filled with fiendish traps and devilish secrets to find. You are aided in your mission by a range of weaponry and armor that can be found around most levels.

Genre

THE best shot-em-up to date arrives on the Playstation for a 59 level romp.

Graphics

The graphics are getting older but they are still good, especially the monsters. The Playstation version introduces clever light sourcing which adds tremendous atmosphere to the game. The powerfull hardware on-board the PSX helps the game engine to run at a speed equivalent to a top-end Pentium PC.

Sounds and Effects

The music is as atmospheric as in the other versions of this game and being on CD are now even juicier. The tunes cleverly change from area to area getting more frantic as you enter the more dangerous sections of the game. This really helps to build the atmosphere as you wander through corridors. Playing this game with the console connected to your Hi-Fi and in a darkened room can be quite a nerve-racking experience.

Playability

The controls are perfect with the strafe movements connected to the shoulder buttons feeling so comfortable. Its a lot easier to control than on a PC or a Macintosh with a keyboard!

There are four difficulty levels available from I am a Whimp to Ultra Violence. In the original version there were 5 levels. Why change this ?

Because I knew Doom long before it was available on Playstation the gameplay wasn't that fantastic for me. But it was fun because there were slight improvements since the PC or Macintosh version and the CD contained both Dooms (Ultimate Doom & Doom II). This means 54 levels and five bonus stages! Also the character moves without problems (well, most of the time).

Doom is even better when a friend of yours rents the game, brings his TV and Playstation along and tries to blow you away with his BFG9000 (now that`s what I call a gun)!

Value for Money

The playability of this game is right up there with the PC version, maybe even better. Great new light sourcing effects have been added. Ultimate Doom and Doom2 on ONE DISK. Quite possibly the best two player link game available for the Playstation. The sounds give this game a realistic tint but I liked the original music better. Doom sets the standard for the genre and in my opinion it always will. If you have never had Doom before go buy it. Trust me on this one, you won't regret it!
