Setting the Scene

This Dragonball is the second installment for the PlayStation and is different from it's previous version. The first one was a 2D-fightergame and this classed under 3D - combat, strategy combat or others (depends on the magazine reviewing it). For me this one was going to be fantastic...

Genre

Beat-em-up

Graphics

The opening sequence is a bit disappointing but it's nice. The characters are ugly because not rendered in 3D and the few places where the action takes place are looking like the first pictures I got (finished at 60%). The animation is pretty fast but there are some nasty glitches here and there. Globally taken : Just acceptable.

Sounds and Effects

There's something that I really don't understand. Why do DB games on Next Generation consoles not support the original music of the series? The combat sounds are very good and make you think that you're one the hero's. When changing characters several not participating fighters give comments. O.K.

Playability

The PSX Joypad isn't perfect at all for this game. On Saturn it's easier to control. The big problem of the game is it's lastability. In the beginning I thought that there were going to be a lot of combats in story mode but it turned out that there were only seven of them. When you've finished these you get a new game-mode : the SP-mode with 30 combats.

As a 2 player game you can forget about this one. Although you can each choose three fighters it's almost impossible to see what they are doing. It's boring.

As for the game system : there is a power balance, if you're kicking your enemy more than he is kicking you, you gain a place on the power balance. When you reach the end of the power balance with one of your fighters, he will throw a "laser" at it's opponent making him lose a life.

Value for Money

The sounds and music are O.K, The graphics are ugly, although the animation is good unfortunately there are some nasty glitches. This game can be finished in a couple of hours and is boring. If you don't know Dragonball well, forget about this one. If you do know it and love real combat games like Tekken 2, move on. Only diehard Dragonball fans will get any enjoyment out of this game.

I would rent this one before buying it - there may be a few people who will love this game, but not many.
