Playability:

The Legend of Dragoon is based in a 3D atmosphere. While traveling on the world map, you are required to follow a set course that is before you. This is one aspect I could have done without, however, the story more than makes up for the lack of freedom to roam.

Ah, the story. LoD's story is full of twists and turns, which is the way it ought to be in a Rpg. Through use of plenty of character dialog and beautiful cut scenes, the complex story line becomes clear and easy to follow. This game gives the characters facial animation like I have not seen before. It is truly gorgeous.

When entering towns or dungeon type areas, you are treated to a full 3D environment. As you move away or toward the screen you character scales up or down accordingly, giving full depth of field feel. You also are given the option of turning on the "arrows". These arrows point to your party, and the available exits, along with any shops or inns that are available. This helps in some areas that are so over run with detail that it can sometimes get a little confusing as to where to go. Or if you're an inexperienced player this system can help you on your way.

On to the battles! The Legend of Dragoon uses three characters in battle at a time. Your group may consist of more than that, but only three at a time can fight. During battle you cannot change weapons, armor, accessories, or additions, so you had best be prepared before picking a fight.

Its worth explaining that "additions" are special combination attacks that most of the characters in your party will learn. As your levels go up, you will learn new additions. To successfully execute these moves you must time your pushing of the X button just right. As you attack a monster, a little blue box will appear at the center of the target. A larger blue box will then spiral towards the small box. When the two boxes connect, WHAM, hit your X button! When done successfully the character will shout out the name of the special attack used. These additions can become very powerful as they move up in level.

As you progress in the game your characters will gain the ability of Dragoon transformation. This is one of the best parts of battle. I won't spoil all of the mystery, but when you transform into a Dragoon, you can do magic or physical attacks. Also if you have all three characters at their maximum Dragoon level, you can combine for a "special" transformation.

When you change into Dragoons there are two very important things to keep in mind. You cannot use items, and by transforming you will automatically cure any status abnormalities that plague you.

Battling is a very interactive part of this game, and lends a dose of skill along with strategy to the task. Also during battles you may use items that are thrown at the enemy. Some of these items are also interactive. You tap the X button as fast as you can to bring the damage meter well above %100, to inflict as much damage as possible. Not only does the damage meter go higher, but also as you bring the damage higher, the visual effect becomes greater and greater.

The only drawback I could find time to complain about was the item inventory. What were they thinking? Your party can only carry 32 items. This may sound like a lot, but trust me, it isn't. I would stock up at a town with healing and a few attack items (because you just know something is going to beat you silly later) only to find my "Inventory Full" as I tried to pick up the treasure in a cave or such. I need more inventory slots!

Staff Opinions
CygnusXI   "Not bad... Legend of Dragoon is a fifty+ hour game, beautiful sound and graphics, and an interactive fighting system all wrapped in one great experience.

The story in Legend of Dragoon is epic and full of surprises, but won't leave your head spinning. This game is plain fun to play and a feast for your senses. My only real complaint is the thirty two-item inventory limit, and even that was easily overlooked.

The enjoyment factor of this game is high, and anyone who wants a great tale, and the gameplay that goes with it, should not let this title slip past them. "
