Playability:

Controlling the craft is obviously far easier than handling a real harrier jump jet, although some developers insist on making control for their flight games a little too complicated for the average guy. Rest easy because Eagle One is an out and out arcade shooter. Face buttons are used to accelerate and slow down (aircraft don't really brake as such), choose weapon and fire away. Shoulder buttons switch views, hover and strafe. Within the options menu you can even activate further assistance such as automatic level, roll lock, automatic hover and even auto throttle.

Instead of diving straight into the action (which I know you all will), why not take a few moments to enroll in the Flying School. This will allow you to become accustomed with the craft, weapons and radar system.

Before each level you are offered a mission briefing. This is followed by a more in-depth description from your gruff voiced commander. Missions are divided into groups of five, with each set on a different island beginning on the trouble Hawaii.

There is a choice of five different aircraft to fly, including the Harrier Jump-jet, an F16 Falcon, an A10 Warthog, top secret Raven Stealth Jet, and a rescue helicopter. Once you understand the mission it is simply a case of following instructions and shooting up the baddies.

Pausing the action for a few moments allows time for a brief update of objectives and targets in a simplified map form. The means you should never really stray too far from the correct route. Your on-screen hud keeps you informed of damage taken, speed and height. There is also a helpful way-point indicator.

Offering a little more to the gameplay is a rewards system that includes acquiring stunt bonuses and getting points for discovering hidden missions and aircraft's. Also there is a two-player split-screen option with two choices of play, including dogfighting mode and cooperative mode.

Game Options:

This is a 1 disk game for 1-2 Player. It is compatible with the standard (digital) joypad and the analog stick controls of the dual shock joypad. Games can be saved via memory card (1 block per save).

Staff Opinions
Adam  "Had Eagle One: Harrier Attack arrived before Ace Combat 3: Electrosphere then maybe, just maybe would I recommend you rush out and check this title out. As it stands it's still worth looking at... but can only be recommended after first trying to get hold of the superior Ace 3."
