Its
great to see that game developers are starting to look further than the
shoot-em-up or the sports simulation for game ideas. On the face of it the 3D
processing power of PlayStation would be an ideal outlet for a new breed of
Pinball games. At last we have a machine that could easily display the most
complex of tables in high resolution three dimensional splendor. Unfortunately
for us all Extreme Pinball doesn`t deliver the goods.

Pinball
game. The four tables on offer are as follows: MONKEY MADNESS: Protect the
astronaut from alien chimps. MEDIEVAL KNIGHTS: Castles, dragons and more.
URBAN CHAOS: Regain law and order. ROCK FANTASY: Make it to the top in showbiz.

Sorry
but this game looks graphically out of place on the PlayStation. The top down
two dimensional mode offered is boring with a capital "B". Even the
animation of the screen is poor, juddering and struggling to keep up with the
ball as it moves around the table - sloppy programming guys.

At
least the music and effects are of a reasonable standard, but again with CD
quality sound at the programmers disposal, they could have made so much more of
this. The arcade pinball machines of today sound absolutely fantastic both in
the effects and the music departments, surely a home computer built for this
purpose should be able to sound awesome rather than average.

There
are loads of mini games to play on each table, which adds to the game and the
four tables are adequately set out, but you are left with the feeling of "been
there and done it before". The four tables on offer may as well just be
three because for some bizarre reason the Medieval Knights table is almost the
same color as the ball in places and playing it becomes very frustrating.

Scrolling
of the table is jerky at times. Loading times are excessive. No 3D mode has
been included. A pretty poor effort from the usually brilliant Electronic Arts.

I
would never tell anyone NOT to buy this game, but I would strongly recommend
that you TRY BEFORE YOU BUY! I played this game for about three hours
in total over the first week and am looking to trade it for another game as soon
as I can. |

Spotting
a silver ball rolling over a silver background is typical of the major flaws in
this game. |
