Image Loading...You want more realism... try the new 'attacking press' move that when used forces the nearest four of your defenders to race toward the opposing player on the ball and tackle simultaneously. Better still is the 'offside trap' move that allows you to move your defensive line up a few yards to catch your opponents off-side.

Controls have been expanded to the level that you can literally tie your fingers in knots during a game. Fortunately everything has been arranged in such a way that the most basic moves are now easier than ever to use. Basically the 'circle' button is reserved for shooting at goal, the 'square' is a high pass and the 'cross' is a low pass. So if you want to header or kick the ball at the goal, hit the 'circle. Chipping or Heading to a team mates chest is 'square' and a regular pass along the floor, or header to your team mates feet is 'cross' - simple..!

Image Loading...Possibly the two most used of the extra moves are the 'shielding' (used to protect the ball from an incoming tackler or when receiving a pass in a crowd - activated by holding R1) and the 'through-ball' (slots the ball into a goal scoring space for your attacker to run onto - activated by holding L1). The skill moves are still available by using the L2,R2 buttons and allow you to jump over tackles and flick the ball past defenders. It should be noted that you can get different types of move by tapping, holding or double tapping many of the buttons.

Playing options begin with a Practice mode where penalty kicks, free kicks, corners or a full training match may be considered. This is worth a quick visit if only to try out a few of the new special techniques including shielding, rainbow kicks, lateral left, 360° and step over nutmegs.

Image Loading...There are an obscene amount of teams to select from. There are 46 International teams allowing the player to create their very own World Cup competition or customize an International league. There are 14 prepared club seasons and an option to mix and match your own league. All of the sides from this years UEFA knockout cup and Champions League may be selected and guided through each tournament (at least EA got it right and don't allow LOSERS of the Champions League to enter the UEFA cup at it's later stages). Choose from a data bank of hundreds of club teams to take part in a friendly exhibition game. There's even over 40 Classic sides from way back in time allowing soccer matches between teams such as Brazil 1958, Celtic 1967, England 1966, France 1958, Liverpool 1977 and Manchester United 1968 (a year the European Champions DID enter the FA Cup).

Image Loading... Of course so much can happen in soccer in such a short period of time therefore the main benefit with FIFA 2000 is the comprehensive player, team and management edit screens. So players have been bought and sold. No problem when using the transfer system to strengthen your team or raise valuable funding. Surely your favorite team won't be changing their team strip again this month? No problem, simply alter the color and pattern of their team colors to match those in real life. Another year... another FIFA game that improves on all previous efforts!

Staff Opinions
Martin: "I am normally the biggest critic of these yearly sporting updates which are churned out simply to squeeze more money from the average punter. However I do believe that 2000 is probably the best FIFA soccer game to date. Of course that statement may only last until FIFA 2001 turns up next year.

I suppose what you really want to know is that should you already own last years version is there enough improvement to warrant a further investment? Graphically... yes! Gameplay wise... it's more of the same! Regardless, it will sell by the droves and one thing's for sure, there will be another next year... and the next... and the next... "
