Playability:

There is little to worry about within the options menu apart from choice of difficulty... normal or expert (no woosies allowed!). The gameplay is now divided into missions, which are explained after each save point. It's possibly worth mentioning that some of these scenarios are quite lengthy before progress is allowed to be recorded onto memory card.

Missions are hardly brain taxing and usually involve the destruction of something near the end of the level. Although there is often a multiple choice of routes only one of them will allow progress onward, therefore if you find the correct way first drop back and check out the others before moving on. They may all lead to a dead end, but many should reveal a stash of hidden goodies and power-ups. This system leads the game to be quite lateral, however you shouldn't often get hopelessly lost.

Controlling Hawk soon becomes second nature with all his attacking moves situated on the face buttons alongside the weapon inventory. Always being in run mode keeps the pace of the game moving along, but for those extra careful situations the walk and look buttons on the shoulders may be administered. Compared to his last adventure Hawk now has much more freedom of movement. He can climb up ladders, clamber on top of boxes, grip and pull up ledges, leap from obstacle to obstacle, monkey climb across chasms and swing back and forth on bars. This allows the split-level environment to be used to its full capacity.

Environments themselves feature indoor and outdoor locations with nine global levels divided into about twenty-five stages making the game structure larger and more complex than its predecessor does.

Enemy AI has been vastly improved as they now no longer seem to line up and attack in turns. For example should Hawk enter an area where six enemies are patrolling only three might initially attack, one will run away, another will raise the alarm and the final foe will possibly hang around to see how the land lies. Hell hath no heroes! Some characters will not perceive the player as a threat unless this becomes immediately apparent i.e. if the player opens fire, interferes with equipment etc. In certain situations it may be possible for the player to avoid any confrontation or obtain information from the characters he encounters.

Weapons play a big part in Fighting Force 2 and ammo seems to be available in abundance. Once revealed (usually by smashing or killing something) it may be stored for later use in Hawk's inventory. His range of firearms include a wide selection of guns, knifes and grenades, which are essential as the enemy keeps on coming thick and fast. Once out of bullets Hawk can always return to good old fist power using his repertoire of over 20 lethal feet and hand combos.

It's difficult to determine the market that FF2 is aiming for. I dare say those who enjoyed the original should get more kicks out of this. Personally I've seen dozens of similar arcade action games and this really doesn't stand out from the crowd.

Staff Opinions
Martin  "The removal of the back to back dual fighting mode has taken a lot out of the Fighting Force sequel. I though that Core would expand on this concept other than drop it in the trash can. Without it FF 2 becomes just another action shoot-em-up of which there many already available on the Playstation."
