Playability:

Where do I start? Having played every F1 related game (and almost every other racer) on the Playstation (including Formula Karts) I consider myself a good judge of what works, and more importantly what doesn't. I knew within the first corner that Formula 1 '98 was the pits. Likewise F1 World GP. On the other hand I was forgiving with Monaco GP Racing Simulation because at least it felt like it had been play-tested and the physics attempted to simulate the feel of racing. The best news yet is that F1 2000 is not overly easy to win on the more challenging modes, but it is so simple to pick-up-and-play.

All your favorites are up for selection including McLaren Mercedes, alongside Ferrari, Williams BMW, Jordan Mugen-Honda, Jaguar and British American Racing. Also present, of course, are all of the real name drivers including 1998, 1999 and current World Champion Mika Hakkinen, 1997 winner Jacques Villeneuve and two-time winner Michael Schumacher, along with a few newcomers such as young Brit Jason Button. With incredibly sophisticated artificial intelligence, each rival driver and car behaves like its real life counterpart and is just as fallible.

All the tracks have once again been captured in all of their glory including Monaco, Melbourne, Interlagos, Magny-Cours, Montreal, Sepang and the brand new Indianapolis.

Players are offered the opportunity of entering a Quick Race, Time Trial, Race Weekend or full Championship. Inner options allow the race to be finely tuned to your personal preferences. This means you can switch off all aids and virtually thrash your way around the tracks almost arcade style. However most gamers will want to enjoy the realism of Formula 1 by changing the weather to realistic, difficulty to expert, laps to half or full and switch fuel, flags, tyre wear, failures and damage firmly on.

Each racing event includes the options of a test day, practice, qualify or race. You can even customize your own grid positions slotting your most hated drivers right to the back of the grid. Before heading off trackside your race strategy must be set up. Tyre compound and number of fuel stops may be judged against a three-day weather forecast.

Qualifying takes place in real time within a one hour session, but the clock can be speeded up to the last ten minutes where all the real action happens. Within the pits most parts of the car can be adjusted to hopefully improve performance. This includes front and rear downforce, gear ratio, steering lock, front and rear suspension, brake balance and ride height. To help keep the car balanced each adjustment is shown on an acceleration, grip, speed and braking slide-scale, summarizing just how the general performance is being affected.

At the start of the race the adrenaline really starts pumping whether you are situated in pole position or right at the back of the line. Both have their pressures. On pole it is important to hold your line until reaching the first corner. Meanwhile at the rear weaving through the customary pile up is a skill in it's own right. After a few laps I settled into the race and began to take note of a few things. The collision detection is most impressive with many accidents happening between CPU cars through CPU driver error. AI is certainly challenging making overtaking very risky, while breakdowns and retirements occur regularly (just like the real thing).

The handling is very good and you will feel in control of the car within the first few laps. If the set-up is not to your liking then a few tweaks and adjustments in the tuning menu will change the feeling of grip and control. In summary: Forget the rest, 'cause this is the best! Check it out!

Staff Opinions
Martin  "What a week! Talk about highs and lows. After enduring the god'am awful F1 World GP I never wanted to see another Formula 1 racer again in my entire life. Then I had to trudge through the dreary Cricket 2000 from EA Sports.

So what shows up next day? You guessed it... F1 2000... from EA Sports. Typical! But all is not lost...

... it's brilliant! This title will sit proudly at the top of the tree with the best of them, that includes your Gran Turismo's and Ridge Racer's. Don't dare fail to check this one out. You'll miss out on a real corker. What a breath of fresh air from the EA Sports team. My faith has been restored."
