Setting the Scene

The intro is well done, nothing extravagant, but it catches the college football aura... anyone familiar with Gameday's interface (which should be anyone who has interests in sports games) should feel right at home with the interface

Genre

American Football.

Graphics

I have read the newsgroups, and the main complaint is that the players are too small, in fact while I was in the store, there was someone returning the game for that same reason. What's my opinion, the players look like midgets, period. They seem technosized compared to Gameday and Madden, I don't know if that was the intent or not, but that's how it came out.

A bonus for this game is the fact that players get muddy when they play in the rain. You can also spot the chain gang running down the sidelines with the play. The animation is definitely adequate, sometimes I hear about a frame missing here or there, but I can't tell the difference. Overall, I 'd say the graphics are so so...

Sounds and Effects

The sounds are very well done, each team has its own fight song, The thump thump clap is still in place from Gameday, and the music is also fantastic. Definitely no complaints in this category...

Playability

A big, big, disappointment in this category. There is such as thing as too many buttons when it comes to running the ball, I don't know how many times I lost yardage with a top halfback due to pressing the wrong button. My opinion is that a good football game can be thrown in the unit and played with little instruction, but to truly master a quality football title, one needs the instruction manual... for Gamebreakers, this was not the case, I had to refer to the manual every chance I got.

On the positive side, I liked the Heisman trophy option where the game tracks the top players in a race for the Heisman. I also liked the Gamebreaker approach, where each team had a player(s) who could break the game wide open with their skills.

Overall, the Gameplay killed this game for me, but the potential is there for greatness down the road on Gameday '97 or Gamebreakers '98.

Value for Money

This game is a rental only, if this game is bought, let the buyer beware, personally, I'm sticking with Madden, and counting the days to Gameday '97
