Playability: One criticism that definitely couldn't be aimed at Gekido would be lack of game modes. There's Urban Fighter, Arena Battle, Shadow Fighter, Team Battle, Survival and Street Gangs Battle. For the single player Urban Fighter is the side scrolling adventure game where your selected character leads you through the 15 progressive 3D environments that make up the huge Gekido world. Beginning with two life lines and three credits players must advance through multiple waves of enemy attacks collecting power-ups and weapons along the way. To make life even more hazardous attacks not only come from all directions, but differing heights. While fending off a group of circling enemies at street level some homicidal maniac will launching exploding drums from above. Meanwhile a pack of vicious hounds grapple with your character's feet at low level. Once an enemy is defeated they disappear from the screen leaving behind the weapon they were armed with. By crouching down your character can pick up and then use the discarded object. Weapons include items such as guns, grenades, knifes and various hand held objects. At the end of each level a super boss character must be defeated before moving onward. Arena Battle is an all-out-free-for-all brawl between any four fighters in a confined arena. There are nine varied characters to select from ranging from man to woman to beast. Up to four human players may take part in this mode with any remaining selections being CPU controlled. Shadow Fighter is the single player arcade mode where 14 randomly selected opponents must be defeated over three rounds of fighting. Team Battle and Survival modes are self-explanatory. Street Gangs Battle is possibly the best mode of them all. Two human players each select a character and then face one another in a street setting packed with interactive objects. Both players have two gang members fighting at their side making for an excellent royal rumble where last gang standing is declared the winner. Controlling the characters follows the tried and trusted routine with face buttons providing various kicks and punches and shoulder buttons offering jumps and crouches. Combos are revealed on screen as you progress through the game. After connecting a few blows on your opponent an additional feature is activated. The whole screen is illuminated when your character enters a Rage and can temporarily perform many remarkable actions. Imagine Bloody Roar 2 and you'll get the picture. It just doesn't play as smoothly. Game Options: This is a 1 disk game for 1-2 Players. Up to 4 Players can enter a single arena with use of a Multi-tap. It is compatible with the standard (digital) joypad and the analog stick controls of the dual shock joypad. Games can be saved via memory card (1 block per save). |
