Playability:

The game is full of magic. The basis of magic in this world comes from the mana eggs. These are found throughout the game in hidden and hard to find areas. Once a mana egg is found, you can turn it into a magical attribute. You can choose which character will get what magical attribute. The basic four magic attributes used are fire, wind, water, and earth. Fire is your best offensive spells. Wind is your best option for multiple enemy attacks. Water magic is best used for healing your party. Earth is the defensive magic that keeps your members alive.

Magic attributes combined have special effects of their own. Fire and wind magic will create lightning power. Water and wind will create blizzard. Water and earth come together to make forest magic. Fire and earth combine to make explosion. The more a character uses their magical elements, the higher their magical level will increase. When certain levels are reached, specific character attributes also expand. New magical spells will also be unlocked.

There are 6 types of weapons: dagger, sword, mace, ax, bow, and whip. Like the magic, with frequent use weapon levels and character attributes will increase. Combined with magic certain weapons have special powers and can be used for awesome attacks.

Equipment for your characters must be found, bought, traded or earned. You can choose what each character will wear. Along with the normal equipment you can wear an accessory. These include special rings and charms. The accessory will change some chare attributes such as attack power, speed, wit, magical resistance, etc.

The interface used is pretty good. Battles use a turn-based system. You can choose from combo or critical physical attacks. Combo attacks are multiple attacks and the critical attack uses a single powerful blow. Magic/Special Attacks let you tap into your magical attributes and special attacks let you combine your weapon and magic for devastating attacks. You can also choose items, which are typical of all RPG's.

The innovative portion of the battle interface is the tactics. You can select from Manual, Play Fair, Power Up, Withdraw, Each Own, Safety, Go Wild, and Meanie. Manual let the user pick the attack. The rest of the attacks are auto attacks. Play Fair makes the character only use their weapons. Power up improves the abilities of the party characters. Withdraw will make the member evade or elude enemies. Each own uses the artificial intelligence of the computer and will let the computer select any of the character's options. Safety uses defensive and recovery spells to keep party members alive at all costs. Go wild uses the most powerful attacks at the party's disposal. Meanie fights while making it difficult for the enemy characters to fight well. You can select any of these attributes to any player at any time. This is useful especially when you want a character to fight a specific way all the time.

The more politically correct gamers may not like the way all the female characters are portrayed. About 90% of their conversation is based around catching a man. Conversations are laden with sexual innuendo and flirtations. The main characters may seem childish at times but that is what they are, kids. Along the way you will meet a number of unique characters with their own personalities. Some will join your party while others will give insight on the task at hand.

The actual story is good. It is supported well with the storyboards and spoken dialog. A few twists and turns keep it interesting. Through your journeys you will travel through forests, explore huge towns, find your way through dungeons, and climb a huge wall called 'The End of the World'. But just because you reach the End of the World do you think your adventure will end? No way. Beyond the wall is a lost world. In the lost world the plants are different, the enemies are fierce, and the opportunity for adventure is enormous. You will meet new allies, encounter new enemies and eventually unravel a great secret. This game will have you playing for a good long time!

Staff Opinions
Tom  "Grandia is a solid RPG with a good story containing many twists and turns. The characters are a little too cutesy for my taste, but are adequate for the story. The weapons, equipment and magic development are typical of most RPG's. I really enjoyed the battle game interface that helps save time. I didn't like the sequence after the battles where multiple screens show gold, experience, and status. A lot of time could have been saved by putting all the information on one screen.

Overall Game Arts has created a wonderful adventure game that while not in the league of 'Final Fantasy', is still a quality RPG none the less."
