Playability:

Right from the start, Grind Session is very easy to learn and to improve with…the developers have definitely succeeded in making this accessible to the masses. There are four modes to choose from: Training, Tournament, Open Skate, and Endurance.

The training mode is much more than an open area where you muddle through figuring out how to use the controller. It actually runs you through a coaching scenario that you have to pass before you can progress. I found this to be an excellent way to avoid some frustrations of being new to a game. It starts off simply, by presenting you with a move to do and it gives you the controller pad key sequence to press to do the trick. You start with a simple jump and work your way to grabs and riding rails and then combo moves. It keeps adding more and more difficult moves that you have to successfully accomplish. Once you've moved to the end of this, you'll be ready for the tournament mode.

Before I move on, in each scenario you get to choose your skater, board and tricks for the board. If you're a dedicated X-Games viewer, you'll recognize names such as Ed Templeton, John Cardiel, Willy Santos and others. There are points in the game that you can unlock for more boards and get to a photo shoot. You can also create your own custom skater if you so choose.

The Tournament mode is where you open up new areas to skate, and you have to "earn respect" to accomplish that. Each level has an amount of respect points you need to earn to unlock the next level. When you do unlock the next level you are given a new trick that you can select from a group of 3 choices.

There are three ways to pile up these 'respect' points: Trick and Pro Points, Technical Lines, and Vandal Points.

The TRICK AND PRO points are received for simply performing tricks. As you pull off a trick, the points tally up…but blow the landing or wipe out and guess what - no points for you!

In the TECHNICAL LINES area, you have to follow the blue, yellow or red line to add time to your round and earn respect. To view these, you use the R2 button to enable skater's eye. This pauses the game, and you can pan around the skater to see what's around and the technical lines are illuminated as you pan. The blue is the easiest, red is the most difficult.

Finally, the VANDAL POINTS are gained by knocking over items and scaring things away as you travel around each of the levels.

Take our advice, once you've unlocked the next area stay where you are. Why not move on, you ask? Because there are key pieces that you unlock in each level once you've gotten the maximum points for that level (40 for each). This has the effect of opening more rooms in the last level called the Dream House, so try and hang in a level until you have gotten everything there is to get.

The open skate mode allows you to skate in the areas that you've unlocked in tournament mode without constraints of time or any tallying of scores.

Finally, the Endurance mode is a very good training tool. In a set time, you have to perform a trick that displays on the screen, nail it and get the next trick and so on. You have to complete all ten in a short period of time.

Staff Opinions
Tom D   "In an effort to wrestle the top spot of the skateboarding crown from Tony Hawk's, Grind Session mimics veritably all of the stuff that made that former title so excellent. In all honesty, it plays damn near as well but does very little to set itself apart. For better or worse (mostly for the better) GS feels almost like an extension to Tony Hawk's…and I guess that isn't necessarily a bad thing.

This is a game that while easy to learn, can provide many hours of work and great gameplay until you achieve nirvana. It takes quite a bit of skill to achieve this plateau. The number of varied game modes will also keep you occupied for a long time.

On a bit of a downside, some of the background music can get numbing and become downright annoying. I kind of wish they would rotate tracks within certain levels like free skate to add some variety. They do rotate the music as you retry the level though which I am grateful for.

All in all, I think Sony has a winner on its hands. Comparing it to the recent release of Thrasher Skate and Destroy, I find this title overall a better product, with more intuitive trick buttons and controls.

If you are just itching to play another great skateboarding game and can't wait for Tony Hawk's 2 to arrive, Grind Session will certainly suffice for the interim."
