Playability:

If you can contain your enthusiasm for a few moments it may be worth first entering the edit mode to correct the spelling of your favorite players names. I did, and duly spent hours messing around in there before a ball was ever kicked. I actually created an entire squad from scratch containing my favorite all-time players. Hair, skin color, facial hair, height, build, age, attributes and specific skills are all cloned onto a polygon block. The player is given a name and then its pronunciation is copied from a sound database. It's brilliant fun. You could even create an entire team of unbeatable seven-foot, green haired, giants. Now when a game commences your created monsters actually appear in the starting line-up and are named by the commentators during the match.

Practice makes perfect. Therefore next I suggest a short spell in training mode to brush up on a selection of set piece moves. This is perfect for trying to bend a free kick around the wall or perform a diving header from a corner kick. There is also a Penalty Kick mode to practice for those sudden death occasions.

There are multiple game modes to enjoy. Play an Exhibition, All-Star Match or P.K. Match against a friend or the computer. The International League consists of a selection of your favorite World teams, while Master League is composed of 16 club European teams. There are six cup competitions including European, African, Asian and American Cups. Each may be staged in tournament or Round-Robin format. Win a trophey in all competitions and a Bonus Trophy will become available to play.

Before you proceed a few minor decisions need to be taken involving game difficulty, conditions, stadium and venue. The match length must also be determined from five to thirty minutes. Formation, strategy and team selection is the final option before the game begins. Gone are the small colored faces representing player status and condition. Evolution is much more in-depth offering multiple formations, tactics, strategy and management orders for individual players. These include man marking, offensive and defensive levels, specific player orders, covering and attack awareness.

Basic movements, such as pass, kick, through-ball and shoot are kept easy by single button pushes on the control pad. Once players feel comfortable they can change to more complicated button combos to enjoy advanced game techniques. To keep the controls simple certain buttons have a multiple purpose such as the shoot button. This can also be used to head the ball and perform stunning overhead kicks and powerful volleys. The top shoulder buttons works well with each having a specific function; sprint and player switch. Combining the L1 buttons with any face button really sets things in motion providing lofted passes, chip shots, one-twos and a chipped through-ball. When defending there are two tackles available which are a quick foot in and a sliding tackle.

The whistle blows and the game is underway. The passing feels accurate and the players respond instantly to your directions from the left Analog stick. A short pass will usually find a teammate, as will an accurate long pass, but it is the inclusion of a through ball that sets ISS Pro above the rest. Neat passing movements will only advance you so far up the field before a 'defense splitting' pass must be played perfectly through the last line of defenders for your striker to run onto. Once you get the hang of this tactic your forwards will stand a chance of breaking through the tightest offside traps and the toughest teams defense. A slide bar is again accessible to increase the speed of play. This is an excellent idea allowing each of the three difficulty levels to be finely tuned to suit your individual requirements.

Shooting requires reactionary skills as you again have a power bar that fills up extremely quick when launching a shot at goal. Too much power when you are too close to the target and your shot will fly high over the bar, this takes judgement but before long you will be blasting 35-yard free kicks into the top corner just like the Brazilians.

My first few hours of play were a little confusing. This was possibly because Konami insist on using an exclusive button configuration. The number of times I pressed the 'through ball' button expecting to speed up, and the 'long ball' button when I wanted to shoot... Doh! After a few sessions the basic controls become second nature allowing you the time to concentrate on the essential chip shots and passes. To reach the finer aspects of gameplay the all new tactics and formation must be implemented as if this was a management game. I found it amazing how seemingly unbeatable teams could soon be overcome by tight man-marking of opposing star strikers, selecting the correct formation for each team played and applying varied strategies over periods of the game.

Staff Opinions
Martin  "Let's not beat around the bush here... with practice, ISS Pro Evolution is brilliant to play!

I don't think there is a soccer game on Playstation that I haven't sampled and this beats the lot, hands down. Well done Konami for striking the correct balance between brilliant graphics and intuitive controls.

On the downside I was disappointed that 2-4 players could not play against each other in many of the competitions.

On the plus side this is the first soccer game on Playstation that plays correctly in 2, 3 and 4 player modes.

Go get some!"
