Setting the Scene:

Based on the popular Japanese comic book series, JoJo's Venture is a high-speed, arcade fantasy 2D fighter that pits over ten fantastic characters against one another and introduces the new Stand attack. The amazing Stand attack unleashes each character's materialized mental energy upon their opponent to deliver devastating results. As with every Japanese comic book style animation there is a tale to tell. So here goes...

A long time ago, at the end of the 19th century on a country estate in England, Sir Joster held a debt to a man who sacrificed his life under the most mysterious of circumstances. Sir Joster took in the man's son, Dio. Unlike the boy's natural father who was selfless, Dio's heart was consumed with greed and an insatiable appetite for power.

Dio obtained a mystical mask that contained incomprehensible evil power. With the mask Dio became an immortal monster. With the new found power Dio waged war on Sir Joster and his family. Jonathon, Sir Joster's son, possessed his own power and repelled the onslaught of Dio. After battles of unimagined proportions Jonathan was able to defeat Dio and banish him into the depths of the ocean.

A century has passed and near the Canary Islands a strange iron coffin is found…

In the land of the Rising Sun Jotaro Kujo (Jojo to his friends) is on the brink of a major discovery. During one fateful night, amidst restless dreams Jojo feels another presence invading his own psyche. "The Stand" has recently overcome Jojo's mother Holly. The Stand is a psychic inner persona that can overpower and lash out without any type of warning. Could these events be linked?

Holly's sickness correlates with the discovery of Dio and Jojo must now seek and destroy the evil incarnate. But scattered throughout the globe are Dio's Minions waiting for the arrival of their master. Hiding, lurking and posing as innocents the servants of Dio will stop at nothing to protect there master and crush any that gets in their way. Jojo will now travel to far away lands gaining new comrades, encountering many enemies, and unlocking secrets that set Jojo on his bizarre adventure.

Sound and Vision:

If there's one thing for sure this two-dimensional fighter is certainly filled with bright colors and lively characters. Immediately noticeable were the combatants who have exaggerated features that spotlight their fighting technique and grappling style. The background scenery appears to have been taken directly from the comic books as the landscapes blend in nicely with the story providing a relative playing environment. In a similar vein there are storyboard sequences and picture tiles, again something you would find in almost any comic book. Overall the graphics are decent for a 2D fighter but aren't really anything to get over excited about.

I found the sounds to be fairly average for a beat-em-up. There are your typical smacks and groans expected out of every Capcom fighter, while special attacks use more powerful blasts and zaps. The game dialogue has been kept in a Japanese format, which I suppose keeps its original flavor. However, by keeping the authentic voices you are forced to read the English translations on the screen, which does get annoying at times.
