the Scene: EA Sports continues its American Football tradition with the launch of Madden NFL 2000. The details and seamless player animations are exactly what you would expect of a classic title making the leap in to the new millenium. Sound and Vision: The
graphics are absolutely fantastic! Clearly the most accurate details of
any game in this genre for the Playstation game console. You can see
things like muscle definition, jersey movement, and big bellies on the
linemen. Player animation is amazingly realistic. The graphics are
delivered at such an incredible frame rate that you'd almost think you
were watching video. The players respond to every nudge of the
controller and react in a way and manner in which you would expect. By
this I mean you have total control of the players and they do exactly
what you want. I was also happy to see some life out of the sidelines. Although they are still not quite what you see in real life, you do get emotional responses and comments from the guys on the lines. I found it great to see the realism extending beyond the playing field and in to the more intimate aspects of the game. The players continue to react on the field as well with comments and actions that have become as much a part of American Football as white lines and leather balls. Madden
and Summerall are together again for the year 2000. I didn't find too
much new here. It seemed to be the same great package that Madden has
become famous for. I didn't find any real problems here except it seemed
that the commentary was a little bit behind the action at times. Of
course there are options to toggle on/off everything from the commentary
to the background music with 12 different options of music as well. Playability: Let me start off by saying that if you are new to this genre or the Madden series, you can not just jump in and start playing this game and expect to be happy and get the most out of the game. Madden NFL 2000 is best appreciated when you can fully understand all of your available options as well the madness that is American Football. There is a definite learning curve here. Madden
2000 allows you to play a Practice, Season, Tournament, Situation,
Franchise, and Exhibition game. There is so much available that it
sometimes becomes overwhelming to try everything. I became a big fan of
the Situation mode in which you can set up any type of game situation
and play it out (i.e.- 27 seconds on the clock, down by one on the
opponents 42 yard line). What would you do? Well, you can set it up and
find out, over and over and over again until you are happy with the
result. Of course you still have all the standards that the Madden series has always had such as player stats, season stats, team stats, creating, trading, dropping players, salary caps, and hundreds of different plays. I always love to play a season and win the Super Bowl, it never gets tiring. Particularly when you are battling your good friends throughout the season. For
those of you that like to give big hits after the play, the fun is
definitely over. I got a personal foul every single time I did it. It
was very realistic but extremely disappointing. All of the other
penalties are very timely and accurate as well. Options that you can set and change range from weather to penalties to game length, skill and more. You will definitely not be disappointed by lack of options. Sometimes I actually felt like I was happy to just start playing the game. The playbooks keep getting bigger, better, and more comprehensive every year. You can even use different playbooks for different teams. For example, if you feel more comfortable with the talent of the Broncos and the plays of the Eagles, you can arrange that combination. This may not sound like much but it is a nice feature that adds to the playability of the title. I
also enjoyed the Madden Challenge. When turned on, John Madden
challenges you to complete tasks and trivia (i.e.- score 21 points in
one quarter). When accomplished you unlock certain secret codes,
something every serious gamer enjoys. With the exception of the learning curve for the new guys, the Playability of Madden NFL 2000 is great. You can't ask for more crisp realistic movement or more user options. This is definitely not a game that you will tire of quickly. Game Options: This is a 1 disk game for 1 or 2 Players. It is compatible with the standard (digital) joypad and the analog stick controls of the dual shock joypad. Games can be saved via memory card (1 block per save). |
