Well,
the Godfather of all fighting games has made it's final 2D appearance on the
Playstation (or so they say). Mortal Kombat Trilogy pulls out all of the stops
in an effort to bring us lucky Playstation owners the best, most diffinative
version of this classic fighting game yet. All of the previous three games have
been rolled into one exclusive package that is sure to give Kombat lovers
instant nirvana. As they say; all the moves, all the characters, all the
screens, it's in there!

My
last exposure to a Mortal Kombat game was on the 32X (yes, I bought one). So
when MKT came out for the Playstation I was expecting to see arcade perfect
graphics...I wasn't dissappointed! The digitized characters and
moving/interactive backgrounds are incredible! I have been so used to playing
polygon fighters lately that I had forgotten how crisp the Mortal Kombat
characters looked. They are a little small when compared to say Tekken, but are
nicely detailed. The blood (and let's face it, this is one of the big
atractions to this game) splatters and falls all over the place quite nicely and
in great quantity, thank-you. The backgrounds are really quite special, highly
detailed environments that feature various animations that really add to the
eerie atmosphere. Character animations, again, are typical Kombat quality.

Ever
play any of the Mortal Kombat games before? Well, all of the sound effects have
been wonderfully reproduced from the arcade onto the Playstation. All the
little quips ("toasty", "Finish Him", etc.) are there. The
music is a combination from the previous three games. Nothing much else to say
except that if you loved the sounds and music in the previous Kombat games,
you'll love this!

As
I had stated earlier, I have been playing the polygon fighter games quite
heavily lately. When I stepped from the quasi-3D world of Tekken II into the
flat 2D world of MKT, I had to develop an entirely new and different strategy.
The character movements and fighting approach is totally, well..., different!
No more rolling or side-stepping, just straight on head-to-head fighting.
With
at least 32 characters to choose from, all of the different backgrounds and
moves to learn and experience I doubt this game will become stale anytime soon.
Also, all the wonderful ending sequences are here; all the fatalities and
brutality moves and the babalities and friendships. You can choose to play
against the computer or a friend in one-to-one, 2 on 2 or 8-player tournament
modes.
As in any Mortal Kombat game, I am sure there will also be
many secrets to be found in this one. There is already hints floating around on
how to get Chameleon to make an appearance!! Does all this make the game
perfect???? Just about, but not quite...you get to "enjoy" long load
time between screens and Shang Tsung's morphing load times are enough to make
you rip someone's spine out!! Well, at least in this game, you can do that...

A
very well designed fighting game with tons of characters to choose from...each
with their own special moves to learn and master. Outstanding graphics and
sounds all add up to an enjoyable, violent fighting experience. Most of the load
times can be seriously reduced by going to the option menu and turning off
profile screens and all-morphing effects...If you have ever played a Mortal
Kombat game and enjoyed it, believe me, the thrill is still there...if you like
fighting games, get this one...if you enjoy a good video game challenge, pick it
up...if you can't stand long load times though, you may want to search
elsewhere...All in all a magnificent conclusion to a worthy heritage of fighting
games.

keep me interested in this excellent beat em up. |

Fans
of the MK series will enjoy this, but I have to say that I prefer the new breed
of 3D beat-em-ups such as Tekken 2. |
