Playability:
Should
you be looking for a Playstation game that would be suitable for
children from the ages 5 years to 9 years old then look no further than
Mulan. The characters are appealing and the gameplay introduces fun into
learning.
Following a roll call, in which the child's name is inserted, a
friendly but clumsy dragon welcomes you to Ancient China. Mushu has been
entrusted with a set of magical scrolls to deliver the Imperial City and
personally give to the Empire. He was warned not to drop them or the
magic would fall out. So what does he go and do? You guessed it! The
child's task is to follow the story and help Mushu find the scrolls and
put the magic back in to them.
The
tasks are wide and varied helping children with their reading skills,
color coordination and understanding of instructions.
For example the game opens up with an old woman
asking the child to collect specific items from a market stall. A small
cursor is dragged across the screen. This turns into a hand when passing
an interactive object, which may be picked up and carried back across
the screen to the old woman. Should the child come back with the
wrong item, or correct item but the incorrect color, then they will be
asked to return and choose again.
Another example is when Mulan requires help to
dress her up for a visit to the emperor. She stands statuesque on a
platform in her dressing room wearing only her undergarments. By moving
the cursor through her wardrobe each item of clothing may be dragged and
dropped onto her body. This includes hairpiece, head garment,
shoal, dress, shoes, robes and something to hold (staff, fan,
umbrella...). Once Mulan has been dressed Mushu the dragon may be
activated for his impression of your handy-work, but he usually just
rolls about laughing and mocking. There are dozens of permutations of
clothing which should hold the child's interest for quite some time.
With
many locations to visit such as Mulan's house, the village, the
dressmakers, the temple, the army camp, the avalanche and the imperial
city there is much to investigate and learn.
Finally the child can write their own story by
using characters and locations experienced during the game. Cut-outs are
placed onto a sheet of paper and then colored in using a paint set at
the the story makers house. It's all good clean fun and will keep
the kids occupied for many hours on those rainy days.
