Playability: To start things off you will be happy to know that NCAA Football is chock full of options. Inside is an Advanced Player Control which allows players to perform realistic moves. Play as an offensive lineman to a receiver in motion. The game uses different forms of tracking from the same national polls used for real games to power polls that rank your team by the strength of your opponents. Awards and ranks are given out to exceptional players across the country. You actually get to see where your linemen stack up against others nation wide. Compare your receivers to other deep threats. Do you have what it takes to compete for the Heisman? The game is broken down into two major portions: Playing the actual game and off season strategy. The game play is crisp and flows well. You can still audible at the line. You can see where your players will be running their routes. Players are have specific attributes so you have to churn out yards up the middle with your power back or burst to the outside and use that speed. The AI of the computer is decent and will adjust to repeated plays that might have worked for you in that first half. I even liked the EA Tips which you can disable once you understand the game. It helps you with various types of plays for certain situations, explains basic theories and what to do for an offense such as the West Coast offense, and even helps on the defensive side telling when to blitz or types of coverage's to use. On the offensive side of the ball players have so many options it is almost mind boggling. A quarterback can pump fake for the aggressive defenses or lateral on that option. Runningbacks can give a stiff arm or juke to avoid defenders. Receivers are able to dive, hop, and burst with speed for that touchdown. Defensively lineman can swim or spin to lay the smack down on the quarterback. The blitzing linebacker can dive or pop into the ball carrier. The defensive backs can jump to block the long bomb. Ah, this is truly football at its finest. For the football freaks out there (me included), you will love the off season activity. As your seniors and sometimes juniors leave for greener ($cha-ching$) pastures, you can track where they were selected in the draft - and they owe it all to you. See where your holes are on your team and now you start recruiting. Build your team to your specifications by receiving scouting reports on individual players. Search the nation or go state by state for that jewel in the rough. Embark on a 5 week recruiting trip that gives updates on players tendency signing with schools and useful scouting information. This time around the game allows junior college transfers that have a limited amount of eligibility. Uses the resources wisely or you fill in roster spots with walk-ons, and trust me if you want to compete you do not want a walk-on. Red shirt guys at key positions, compare your recruiting season with other schools, and finally start the year all over again. As you can tell, I really liked this game. Each year EA continues to improve on this franchise and for this year we have a truly complete package. It's a good thing too, because now they can focus their efforts on bringing this gem to the PS2 for next year!!
