Playability:

Even though this is a tongue-in-cheek game that focuses more on the quality of the tackles and the trash-talking, the game still is played much in the way of more conventional football games. The controller on analog will respond to both the joystick and the arrow buttons, so you can switch freely between them. You definitely feel the impact on the dual shock controller when you make a tackle or get hit.

This game has four options: Quick Start, Season, Playoffs and Tournament for 2 to 8 players. The quick start is what you'd expect. You can quickly enter into a matchup between two NFL teams and start playing. You are able to choose which team you play for and you play either against the computer or against another player. The season is an 8 game event that your chosen team will play against other teams in the league. The tournament will allow up to 8 players to play in a single-elimination bracket fashion.

Now to the games at hand… The first thing you notice is that the football field is shorter than regulation, kind of like arena football. There are also not 11 players per team, so it's fewer players to keep track of. Each quarter is only 5 minutes long, so the game is quick and high scoring. Whether on defense or offense, you have a whole slew of plays to choose from. Once you choose your play, the action begins. It generally appears to resemble a normal football game until you realize there are no offside violations when you jump the gun or go in for your first tackle. With some selected button mashing you can grab the player by the arm and send him flying into the sidelines; or if he's elusive, all you'll be left with is his jersey as he zips by and you hear a ripping sound. There are no refs and no penalties. So after the play is over, you can send a player over to another player from the opposing team and give him a body slam for good measure. When a player has a good offensive or defensive play, he'll rip his helmet off and talk trash. You'll see the face of the more well-known players and recognize his voice as well. That is a lot of fun. You can even be disruptive on defense by randomly slamming players during the play, which is really distracting and helps to kill the offense's momentum. Kicking off, punting and kicking field goals is done using a power meter that you hit a second time when it hits the maximum level. This is easily mastered and is needed to keep you competitive.

The games cruise along at a nice clip and when it's you against the computer and until you get your "chops" down you'll end up on the losing side most of the time unless you're a seasoned football gamer. The object though really isn't to win, but to be more vicious and tactless player out there. This is one game that playing against a friend can really be enjoyable and more exciting. You'll definitely find yourself digressing into gratuitous violence and not really concentrating on the game, which is the real purpose of this title anyway.

You'll also find that 989 Sports has made being silly the focus of this game. You are given the option of adding players to the rosters. They have several names on their web site that you can enter in as player names that give all the players a unique feature or add an unusual playing field. For example, enter in Coinhead Corey, and play a game, and all the players will have a large, flat 2-D head. Enter in Aircraft Carrier for the name and you'll be playing on a deck of an aircraft carrier. There are many others on the list.

Game Options:

This is a 1 disk game for 1-8 Players (with Multi-tap). It is compatible with the standard (digital) joypad and the analog stick controls of the dual shock joypad. Games can be saved via memory card (1 block per save).

Staff Opinions
Tom D  "NFL X'treme is 989's second attempt at arcade style, anything football and for the most part it is a big improvement over their first effort. If you're a purist though and only want to play regular football, this game is not for you. If however you like to have some fun and add a little "WWF" to your football playing, this game is a lot of fun.

This is definitely a game geared for and best if played against another player. You'll tire of the game if it's just you versus the computer, but can really have some fun if you're punishing a friend's on-screen players. The reactions you'll give each other will be worth it all.

The game has good graphics and high-quality sound. The players are right out of the 1999 rosters and are recognizable for the most part. The object of this game is "in your face" fun and 989 Sports has accomplished this so strap on your helmet and get ready to rumble. "
