Parasite Eve 2 is the second installment of the series. PE2 plays like a combination of a shooting game and a horror strategy game.
In this sequel you play the part of the returning heroine, Aya. It's been a few years after the "Eve" incident and now you work for a sub-division of the F.B.I. to hunt NMC's (Neo Mitochondrial Creatures). NMC's are a related mutation that has come about since Eve's destruction.
Graphically this is right on par with the original. Wonderfully done pre-rendered backgrounds adorn the entire game. The overall settings do seem a lot darker though and the character animations, while nice, are nothing overly exciting. The best visuals definitely come from the games cut scenes. Both the real-time and especially the CG movies are done extremely well, conveying the story beautifully throughout the game.
Audio wise, I found Parasite Eve 2 a little lacking...
Ambient noises were present, but too sparingly it seemed. Many times the game seemed to go silent for ages and unless you ran into a group of enemies, you can almost hear the clock tick. When they do kick-in, the sound effects and cut-scene audio are adequate and seem to fit well, adding to the drama.
The game play in PE 2 is similar to that of the first, with a few exceptions. The battles now are in real-time so there is lots of running and shooting, however, Aya's parasitic magic use is still done using the "grid" method - freezing the action while you select a spell. The battles themselves seemed a little tough at first until I got used to this new system. When in battle, you automatically point in the targets direction which made it harder to maneuver.
There are plenty of weapons, armor, items and magic to go around here. Most of the accessories we have come to love from the first Parasite Eve are here in one form or another. A tweak here and an upgrade here, really gets the job done. All the items in PE2 are great fun to use and find... just be sure to have plenty of ammo. Your inventory is still limited, as in the first, so be careful what you get. Also you will be stuck with any weapons or armor you collect, so choose wisely.
· Graphics that will tell a great story through beautiful scenes. PE2 has cut scenes in both real time and CG that will blow you away.
· A menu system that is user friendly. The menu interface has been reworked for PE2 and is much easier to use. The maps that are accessed are also very detailed.
· A slew of weapons, armor and other items. PE2 is chocked full of all sorts of goodies to find as you search for NMC's.
· Real time battles. The battle engine has also been revamped. No more standing still, you must keep moving if you want to survive.
