Playability:

"God Sim" types games like Railroad Tycoon 2 among others tend to be rather intimidating at first glance. There is just so much that can be accomplished with these types of games that knowing all of the things to do can be a daunting task. I have always found that you can't get too wrapped up in the logistics early on, and rather the best approach is to just jump in and start whacking away at the game, figuring out the various nuances as you go along. The great news with Railroad Tycoon 2 though is that the game actually includes a wonderful online "learn as you play" tutorial that will take you step by step through the basics in the title and prepare you for what to expect in the actual game. This is a good thing because the provided onscreen icons are rather confusing at first and knowing the order in which to use them would be a nearly impossible task without some sort of direction.

The game is basically broken into a few modes gameplay:

The first is of course the Tutorial. Here you can jump right in and learn the basic fundamentals of owning and controlling your own railroad company. Since you have nothing really to lose in this mode, the stress if off and you can focus on getting your act together for the next mode which is….

Campaign Mode. Here you are thrown into a world where you control your own railroad company. You are given a generous amount of cash to start with (over $1,000,000) and are tasked with completing 18 individual campaigns at the end of which your goal is to have the most successful (as in profitable) railroad company in the world. The campaigns start off nice and slow and are rather easy at first giving players a chance to learn the ropes a bit, but then the difficulty starts to ramp up considerably. The sheer scope of this mode is impressive with players not only having to learn how and where to place tracks and which products to deliver, but also how to play the stock market and invest for your companies future. Upon completion of this mode you will be pretty damned informed to the day to day operations of running your own company. Things can get pretty cutthroat as you learn the ropes. Strategies to success are learning where to optimally place tracks, use the best trains for the job (and for the money), deliver the desired goods at the best price. Ultimately though you will want to invest in other companies until you own a majority share and can either buy them outright or run them out of business. Hey, it's a dog eat dog world out there and only the baddest ass of the bunch is gonna walk away the victor.

New Scenario is the last mode and also the most flexible. Here players can set the difficulty levels and be provided with a wide-open world in which to develop their RR Empire. You can enter into any era currently available, from the late 1800's and steam engines to the late 1900's and powerful locomotives or electric's. The game will also progress past the year 2000 and enable gamers to get a feel for the future. You can also select the global location that you would like to begin your construction in and then manage that scenario with the money that has been allotted to you.

Another nice feature in the New Scenario mode is Sandbox. Here you have free reign to develop your railroad kingdom without the hindrance of money or industrial concerns. This is a great mode for just letting players have at it with the game and build tracks and run trains to your hearts intent.

Railroad Tycoon II may not be for everyone though. The pace in the beginning is super slow, the graphics are rather simplistic and the learning curve is a steep one. But for those that choose to persevere through this simulation, the rewards are great. Just think, this game will actually give gamers a glimpse into manipulating the stock market, running a big business and having to deal with other corporations and industries. As you build your railroad industry things can start to get kind of hectic and out of control as you scramble to keep things moving smoothly and stay ahead of your competition. Hey, you didn't think it would be easy sitting on millions of dollars now did you!

I tell you what though, it is hard to explain the satisfaction that you feel when you successfully manage to slice your way through the Swiss Alps and deliver goods that where previously unattainable by any other means. Since you are the only provider in town, you can also charge a premium for your product! Sweet deal and a sweet little game…

Staff Opinions
Tom R  "Railroad Tycoon II is the follow-up to the hit PC game, ported over to the Playstation console. Gamers will get to experience just what it must feel like to own and operate their very own railroad company. You will be responsible for all of the day to day operations of your fledging business and even get to roll your sleeves up and place tracks and select and maintain your trains. Heck, you can even commandeer a bulldozer and start knocking over trees and leveling the ground…but beware, everything costs money…BIG money.

The graphics are certainly not groundbreaking and the sound effects and music were a bit off for my tastes but they do the job and assist this tasty little package into coming together rather nicely.

For 'sim' nuts this is a great game to pick up and lose yourself in, for all others I would recommend a rental first to see if you like this sort of thing. "
