Playability: Difficulty comes in three levels of which easy is too simple and medium not average enough. If you prefer to go for a quick test drive before the main event then there is a standard Time Trial mode where several of the tracks may be played as a single player race against the clock. There is also a two player split screen racing mode which moves a little slower and visually seems a bit squashed, but then that's two player split screen for you. Bring back link up, I say. Selection of Arcade allows you a choice from 16 cars including the Peugeot 106 maxi, Hyundai Coupe, Seat Ibiza, Ford Escort, Nissan Almera, VW Golf, Renault Maxi, Vauxhall Astra and Honda Civic VTi. Gearboxes come in 4 to 6 speeds in manual or automatic. Arcade mode begins with a Rally of Wales taking the tour to such locations as Clocaenog, Hafren and Dyfi. Points are awarded for position finished. After all six Welsh races have been completed the tour moves onward with the Pirelli International Rally heading through such scenic settings as the Lake District and Northumberland. Before beginning a stage it is worthwhile checking the weather, time of day and surface conditions of each venue, which are displayed on the right of the screen. This information is invaluable when setting up the car as tyre, gears, suspension, brake balance and steering sensitivity may all be adjusted. Expect to face all types of weather condition from torrential rain to falling snow where deep treaded tyres are required for extra grip. At the start of each arcade race your driver sets off all alone. There are four other vehicles spaced out further down the track at regular intervals. Obviously your car travels much faster than the rest so each will be caught up gradually and at no time should there be more than two cars on screen at one time. I suppose this system keeps the player interested for the entire race but it does seem strange when a car is eventually caught up it suddenly appears to travel at a very similar speed to your own. Rally Championship is pure arcade in it's handling and at times feels as if you are controlling a runaway toboggan down a very slippery track. The further you travel down the track without breaking, colliding or touching the roadsides, the faster you seem to go. The roads are barely the width of one car and should the verge be slightly mounted your vehicle slows down dramatically. This makes passing another car a nightmare scenario. In fact the only way I found this feasible involved building up as much speed as possible and then barging through like a madman. Unfortunately the collision detection is so poor that the slightest shunt only seems to affect the car that you control, while the CPU car gets away Scott-free. Full championship features the same venues as arcade mode but the format remain true to a real rally race. Each stage lasts about three to five minutes with regular check points recording your current session time, difference between the leader and current race position. You don't actually see another car in this mode, but are always aware that the slightest slip up will see you plummet down the leader board. Game Options: This is a 1 disk game for 1 or 2 Players. It is compatible with the standard (digital) joypad and the analog stick controls of the dual shock joypad. Games can be saved via memory card (1 block per save). |
