Playability: continued...
One
other nice feature that has been added to RE3 is the ability to utilize
certain "background" objects as weapons. What I mean by this
is that at certain points in the game you may be faced with an
overwhelming swarm of zombies. You can choose to try to stand off
against them and use all you ammo to take them down
if you are quick enough or there may be oil or
gas drums laying about that when hit with a bullet, will burst into a
fiery explosion. Now if you time things just right, you can
explode the drum and take out a whole group of Zombies with just one
shot! Besides, it just looks cool to watch them burn up and whither away
hehehe.
RE3
also introduces another new character as well as bringing back some old
favorites to fill in the gaps in their storylines between RE 1 & 2
(remember what happened to Brad?). The new character is Carlos Oliveira
who actually worked for Umbrella! He was part of the countermeasure
service that has been sent in to help clear up the mess and to also get
rid of any incriminating evidence that can be used against Umbrella.
Carlos ends up being a fresh face in the game and knows how to kick some
serious ass
but can he be trusted???
No Resident Evil game would be complete without the puzzles and Nemesis
has some good ones. Maybe it is just me but the puzzles seemed to be
laid out a bit more logically and made more sense. I also found them to
be at least as creative as some of the better puzzles found in the
previous two games.
As
you venture further into the game you will come upon another little
Capcom innovation that they call Live Selection. These events occur when
your character is about to face an extremely dangerous situation. You'll
know when this happens because the screen colors will begin to dissolve
to black & white and you will then be given a choice. Depending on
what you choose to do (for example: face an opponent or run your ass
off!), will influence the direction the game will take. If you are not
quick though, a choice will be made for you and it's usually not the
best option!
Finally, since this game does start out right before the events of RE2,
you will get a chance to go through the police station. I really enjoyed
seeing this part of the game because the station was so different just
prior to the dealings of the last game. Areas that I used to have access
to in the 2nd game where now boarded up tightly here in anticipation of
the zombie attacks. The station was all too familiar, yet foreign at the
same time
eerie.
Of
course you will also have to face off against the games title character
namely
Nemesis. This nasty creature just happens to carry around a
rocket launcher and has an extreme hard-on for S.T.A.R.S. members
but
why?? Ah, yet another piece of the mystery to figure out.
Yes Capcom is milking this series for all it is worth, but at least
they are making improvements each time around and filling in the empty
pieces from the previous games. By the time you are done playing all of
these games you are going to know Racoon City as if you actually lived
there. Whether that is a good or bad thing is for you to decide, but I
know that I look forward to the next progression in this series and
where it will take me to next!
