Playability:

A tidy looking game, but is there anything special that will hold your attention for the duration of play?

Actually there is. Rather than force feed us with dozens of similar races combined to become a championship... or a league... or a knockout cup, Renegade Racers offers 32 individual challenges spread over nine race modes. Instead of merely battling your way through the field to pole position a dual challenge is thrown down at the start of each race. This may simply involve finishing in first or second place, but it could also be against the clock. Finish first, but run out of time and you lose.

Some races don't even have opponents and expect you to collect over 30 floating balloons, within a set time scale, in only a couple of laps. In one of the Arctic levels 15 snowmen must be ploughed through within two minutes and three laps. There's even a race against the clock with a side mission of recording a 200 meter long jump over a ramp using the booster pick-up. Another task involves launching from a series of ramps and then landing on a circular target. Points are awarded for how near you land towards the centre of the target. This all adds up to a racing game that never becomes monotonous.

Renegade Racers has three difficulty levels and multiple game modes. The aforementioned challenges are incorporated in Arcade mode. As you progress more and more tracks are revealed. After a certain number of races extra characters are also awarded.

A quick race may be selected for a 1-2 player individual race on any of the tracks which have already been opened in Arcade mode. Although quite good fun the split screen mode is hampered by the size of the viewing area and would have benefitted from a first person view.

Other game modes include the customary high score mode (Time Trial) and a Party Play Game where a time is set on the length of the race rather than the number of laps.

Initially there are six wacky characters to choose from with a further six to unveil. Each has their own personalized weapons to add to the multiple pick-ups such as health boost, turbos, weapons and shields.

Game Options:

This is a 1 disk game for 1-2 Players. It is compatible with the standard (digital) joypad and the analog stick controls of the dual shock joypad. Games can be saved via memory card (1 block per save).

Staff Opinions
Martin  "At last! A racing game where a little though has been put into the gameplay. The arcade mode is so refreshing and takes the boredom out of driving round and round the same circuits, over and over again. The graphics are fine and the sounds are okay. Shame the spilt screen mode isn't that much fun. Still... as a single player cartoon racer Renegade is definitely worth checking out."
