Playability:

The gameplay is simple. You wander around a 3D world collecting keys and shooting zombies, loads of them. Moving through the game you regularly come across locations with multiple routes to choose from giving the game great replay value. For example the first area leads towards a darkened alley with three possible exits. The first door leads to a chapel scenario, the second through the kitchens, the third into the theatre. No matter which you decide to go through it will eventually lead to the same courtyard later in the game, but there's a massive amount of exploring to do in each area... and lots of secrets to unveil. Moving onto the next zone yet another three doors are available... and so it goes on. In reality Resident Evil Survivor could be played through in it's entirety at least three times investigating new locations and facing different monsters each time.

The G-Con works perfectly, but it's the faultless use of the analog pad that makes this game accessible to all. The top shoulder buttons are used to home into the nearest enemy and bring up an on-screen cross-hair. Once the target is lined up simply pump away at the fire button situated on the face pad. Other face buttons are used to run and implement an action. The start button accesses the in-game menu, files and map screen similar to past Resident titles.

Permanently displayed on screen is your choice of weapon, number of bullets in barrel and current status of health. At the start of the game your character is armed with the standard handgun holding unlimited bullets. But later on goodies such as the shotgun, magnum and grenade launcher may be discovered if you look around very carefully. Each gun automatically reloads when the barrel has been emptied, but only if you have sufficient ammo in your inventory. Health may be administered by using combinations of green, blue and red herbs, or a large health bottle should you be lucky enough to discover one.

The game pattern then follows the tried and trusted Resident routine. Should a door prove locked then a key will probably need to be found in a nearby location. Obviously this room will be packed with vicious Zombies who will do almost anything for a taste of your sweet.... young... tasty.... blood. Killing a creature depends on what it is. Zombies are probably the easiest with five or six hits taking them down. Don't forget to pump a few extra bullets in them when they fall to the ground because you just know they will get back up again if you don't. A pool of blood is a sure sign that the dead are now dead... hopefully. Some creatures take dozens of shots with little effect, therefore agility as well as marksmanship is the order of the day.

There are two difficulty levels, with normal mode offering five continues. However the player cannot save a game until they have been defeated. You must then start all over again but at least you can save the weapons already found, which is some help second or third time around.

Maybe Capcom could have gone the extra mile and made this a first person shooter, but then they would have received many complaints that it was far too short. Overall Resident Evil Survivor excels at what it is meant to be... an arcade gun game. Nothing more. Nothing less.

Staff Opinions
Martin  "Don't expect 30+ hours of gameplay because Survivor is an arcade shooter. A good player should complete the game within a couple of playing hours. However, with many other routes to investigate and the worlds most hardest end of game boss character to defeat you will be playing Resident Evil Survivor long after other light-gun games have been thrown on the second-hand pile."
