Setting the Scene

I remember when I heard about Street Fighter II being released on the SNES a while back. Being a Street Fighter nut I had to rush out and buy a SNES along with a copy of SFII. It was one of my favorite games for the longest time. I had a bunch of my buddies come over and we would play that game until our eyes burned from staring at the screen.

So you can imagine how thrilled I was when Capcom announced their new Street Fighter Alpha game. This time I already had a Playstation and I rented the game. Let me tell you right now I'm glad that I did. SFA is supposed to take place before SFII and after the original Street Fighter game. Some of you may notice that the new characters sound familiar, some of them are from the enemy line up from the first game and the game Final Fight.

Genre

Beat-em-up.

Graphics

Although the graphics are better, they are not exactly "next-gen". There are a few nice effects thrown in, such as when defeating an opponent with a super move you, the whole screen explodes with a bright white light. Overall the presentation is nice and cartoon-like, but not spectacular.

Sounds and Effects

The new characters are refreshing but the music is bland. The hits are nothing new and the voices at the end of the match are not only muffled there Japanese!!! I mean come on Hollywood does voice overs for entire movies. With the amount of storage space on a CD they could of definitely done much better with the sound. Right in the middle of a match the music just stopped!?! Then a couple seconds later it just started again!?! I hope this doesn't scare too many people (or reveal my age but it almost reminds me of the dreaded 8-track.

Playability

To help out all of the SF past masters, the controls are pretty much like the SNES controls. Ken and Ryus fireball are the same etc... (I was using a turbo controller).

I'm sorry to say it but this game is just tired. After Games like: Mortal Kombat, Battle Arena Toshiden and the like... SFA is just what it is:- a memory.

There are some new things like using a power meter to guage the amount of damage your super move can do and new combination hits. Unfortunately its just not enough to raise my interest in this game.

Sorry Street Fighter fans. Lets hope DarkStallkers is better. Unless you must own every Street Fighter game out pass on this one or a least rent it first.

Value for Money

Great new characters as well as the return of old favorites. The music and effects are very average. The controls and moves are pretty similar to previous games. Been there, seen it, done it before. Rent this one before you consider buying it.

This die hard 2D battler seems to live on and on. A great 2 player game, but like most beat-em-ups has a very limited shelf-life when played in solo mode.
