Star Trek Invasion is a space based shooter with a good deal of strategy elements thrown in for good measure. It's mission based and it's Star Trek.need I say more?

Now, jumping into the graphics side of things.Holy crapola! Star Trek Invasion appears to be pulling out every PSX trick in book here. From the open CG movie, to the menu system layout and finally to the actually game itself, the graphics are luscious and incredibly well thought out.

The game takes place in a deep space with wonderfully depicted nebulas, planets and starships. I was very impressed with the size and detail of some of the ships in the game. It is hard to describe the feeling of doing a fly-by of a mothership in your dinky Valkyrie cruiser.the developers are surely squeezing every last drop of texture and polygon pushing power from the PSX to get these kinds of visuals.

There is also some very good lighting and particle effects and some nifty tricks being used to show depth of field and give one the illusion of looking at a very deep, dark universe. No real complaints at all in the graphics department people.the visuals ROCK and fortunately the sound department follows this area up nicely!

"In space no one can hear you scream." Well luckily in videgames taking place in space we get treated to a plethora of sounds effects and musical scores.

Sound effects range from familiar sounding Star Trek classic phaser and photon blasts to the crunching sound of metal ships exploding.

Fans of the series will also be pleased to know that Micheal Dorn (Worf) and Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart) lend their voice talents all through this game.

The actual musical score is rather subliminal and fits in well with the forebodingness of space.

With over 30 missions to play through, Star Trek Invasion is a Trekkers dream game on a console system. The game is gonna start you off in Mission 1 which is really a training mission split into five distinct objectives. You are guided through the objectives by Worf and receive a pass or fail grade. If you manage to pass (the training mission is actually pretty damn hard!), you are then graded on accuracy, kills, and ship condition and given a rank. Depending on the rank you may get the option of participating in another training mission (1A).

Once you get into the meat of things, the game really picks up and offers players a nice variety of mission objectives. There is also a nice little plot and background story taking place as your progress through the game involving the perceived defection of a Federation Star Ship. As you move through the game you uncover clues and discover the real reason for the rogue Star Ship commander.

Most of the missions are space based and involve a variety of objectives such as seek and destroy, protect and deliver vessels, rescue missions and covert operations. There are even some planet based missions that will have you piloting your cruiser across the upper atmosphere while attempting to take out enemy ships.

There isn't a lot to complain about in this game, especially if you are a fan of the series but there are a few little drawbacks that I can see. First, the game is not real easy and will take time to effectively learn and use the controller layout (every single button is used except for the R/L3 ones). Second, the game takes place in space.things could get rather boring in space. Luckily the missions are pretty diverse and should keep interest levels high. Lastly, the missions are a bit unbalanced. As you progress the game naturally gets harder but there are some missions (mission 5 anyone?) that ramp up in difficulty to the extreme and then the next mission is almost a breeze to get through in comparison.

All in all though, this is a nice piece of Star Trek pie for you to feast on and I had a lot fun playing through the game.I think you will too!

Summary
Tom R   "Star Trek Invasion a long overdue Star Trek game for the Playstation gaming console.and it was worth the wait.

Taking place in the Next Generation timeline, Invasion will take gamers on an adventure ride of over 30 missions where you will get to fly and command a number of Star Trek space vehicles. The missions come in a variety of objectives and should keep gamers on their toes and coming back for more. Make no mistake though, some of these missions are tough.hell the training mission alone is a task to get through.

The graphics are top notch featuring some of the best seen design yet on the PSX and the sound effects are classic Star Trek all the way. "
