Playability:

At the front end players are offered the opportunity of entering a Single Race, Championship, Practice or a 2 Player head-to-head championship. Choose from three ranges of difficulty, 2 to 10 laps per race, four varying weather settings and an option for realistic tyre wear and damage.

Select your bike and rider before moving on to the set-up screen. Adjusting the forks, suspension, tyres, and gearing is essential to succeeding on the track as slight changes dramatically affect the performance and handling of the bike. There are several factors that control the physical dynamics of bikes, acceleration, inertia, velocity, and traction all affect the ability of the machine to negotiate the track. A compromise must be reached within the parameters to get the most from the machine. For those who just want ignore the technicalities and dive straight into the action there is an option to switch on the CPU assistance making braking and cornering much easier.

In both Championship and Single race modes there's the option for a Quick Race or to enjoy a complete Race Weekend, just like the real thing. Should you decide on the lazy option then your rider must start from the back of the grid and then work through the field. However a full racing weekend includes a free practice session, a Superpole and 2 full races. The position awarded in the Superpole event determines the starting position for both main races.

The control pad caters for analog and digital control, while both types may be combined. Aside from the usual brake, accelerator and look back actions please take note of the addition of a 'sit up button'. When pressed the rider raises his head and expands his body to increase wind resistance. This can be pressed when entering a not-so-steep corner to slightly slow the vehicle down.

The circuits are extremely varied and prove a fitting challenge. Tight winding tracks require split second reactions and intelligent breaking or else it's a run-off into the v-e-r-y s-l-o-w sand traps, which take an age to get out of. To help gauge approaching steep bends, Turn Assist Displays appear on screen. These are color coded to help judge your speed going into corners. A red sign means that you're going too fast and risk crashing. Grey informs that your speed is correct, while green indicates that you can even think about speeding up a little.

If you decided to make the game as realistic as possible then a Bike Damage Display remains permanently on-screen. As your bike condition deteriorates through collisions, wear and tear then segments of the icon gradually disappear. Control is affected and can only be rectified by taking a pit stop. As soon as you enter the pits the CPU takes control of the bike while you decide on which repairs should be carried out.

After a few laps I began to take note of a few things. On the negative side I found the collision detection to be a little too clumsy and CPU AI seemed very pre-programmed. Crashes seemed few and far between, while breakdowns were non existent. Controlling the bikes takes practice and I discovered that taking your finger off the accelerator worked as effectively as using the brake button. I also found this game lacked the feeling of travelling at really high speed, especially on the long straights. Anyone who has driven a motorbike over the ton will know how mind blowing this feels, but any idea of this experience is sadly missing from the game.

On the positive side correct set-up does make a massive difference. The analog sticks are perfect for steering and accelerating and I suppose that if the game moved any faster then most of your time would be spend trudging through those dreaded sandtraps.

Staff Opinions
Martin  "As long as you realize that you are getting a pure arcade racer, rather than a true sporting simulation then Superbike 2000 will surely serve it's purpose. The graphics are fine, the sounds are acceptable and the challenge is fitting. In fact it's almost worth waiting through those l-o-n-g loading times for... well... almost!"
