| Playability: You play as either Gabe or Lian, depending on the level and situation. You can be armed to the teeth with many weapons. Overpower an opponent, open up guarded chests, or uncover weapons in hidden places. Defeating an enemy can be done by massive damage from bullets, a slash of a knife, a shock of a taser, or the bulls eye accuracy of a headshot. Different weapons are effective on the various enemies put before you. But for those of you familiar with the first Syphon Filter you will know that this isn't your typical go in and destroy everything in your path kind of game. There is a lot of stealth required to be successful and learning how to pull off some good sniper shots is a must. The story is involved and you can tell a lot of thought and effort was put in this creative process. So as I said, sometimes stealth is your best ally yet other times force is not an option and escaping is the only way to proceed. Syphon Filter 2 is not for the weak of heart. To call this game a challenge is a vastly underemphasizing statement. Strategy is a major portion of this game. Enemies block your path over a realistic terrain. You have to run, weave, climb, hang, jump, and take cover in the environment. The type of environments ranged from mountains to buildings to even moving trains. Not only do you have to watch your step but you also have to ration your bullet clips. Fire away and you will be lost. You start the mission with certain tasks but as situations come up, new objectives are put before you. The story gets you involved and you must find out more information to uncover the conspiracy unraveling before you. The 2 player mode is a battle where you are pit against another opponent. This objective is simple; take out your opponent before you get obliterated. Many battle areas are available but most must be unlocked. The environments are over multiple levels and you can fully interact with your surroundings. The action is fast and furious. Overall, Gabe's latest adventure is quite similar in style to his first but the improved graphics, two-player battle mode and lengthened gameplay make Syphon Filter 2 a worthy successor to the first title. It looks as if 989 Studios has a real keeper on their hands here and I look forward to seeing the next sequel appear on the PS2 (please!). Game Options: This is a 1 disk game for 1 Player. It is compatible with the standard (digital) joypad and the analog stick controls of the dual shock joypad. Games can be saved via memory card (1 block per save). |
