Playability:

Before setting off on a mission it's worth checking out and customizing the control pad. Actions such as shoot, use, select, look, crouch, sniper mode and strafe may be re-set to any buttons you wish. This may take a few false starts, but eventually you will find a set-up that feels natural.

There are two difficulty modes, which involve playing as a standard agent, or the much tougher 007. I would suggest trying out the first level as an agent to get the feel of the game. However, you should then quit the game and replay it in 007 mode or TND won't take very long to finish as agent mode is ultra easy.

The first level is a basic shooter where hordes of enemy agents must be assassinated before eventually reaching, and marking out their base satellite. As Bond closes in a potential target is automatically locked-on making shooting them really quite simple. Also, using sneak mode stops them from seeing you until very late. By then they should have been taken out using the standard issue PK7. It is equipped with a silencer and thankfully has unlimited ammo.

Once an enemy has been snuffed out their body will disintegrate leaving behind a small power-up such as a health pack, weapon upgrade or piece of armor. Health and armor are vital to survival because poor old James only has three lives and it barely takes a couple of hits for him to die.

Very early in the game Bond gets his hands on a sniper rifle. This is ideal for picking off enemies from a distance. Eventually a wide range of weapons and gadgets become available. Firearms include rifles, auto 9mm, sub-machine gun, gas bombs, grenade launcher and mines. All new Q gadgets include include explosive cuff links (now we're talking), fingerprint scanner, satellite link camera and laser designators.

As the first mission comes to an end Bond must escape from the now alerted enemies by slipping on a pair of skis. He must negotiate a slalom course while fending off a gang of baddies by kicking and punching them. It all get very 'ESPN Xtreme games', but I suppose the variation stops the gameplay from becoming boring.

Other missions allows the player to delve into the intricacies of espionage - photograph enemy documents, eliminate enemies in silence, rig targets with timed explosives, sabotage opponent's encampments to gain tactical advantage and break into a secure building, photographing secret documents before detonating a bomb to aid your escape.

Now this all sounds very exciting, BUT... and there are a couple of them... Control is very slack. This becomes annoying when enemies quickly attack from multiple directions, leaving you over-shooting a desired target. Then that old Doom problem of snagging onto the scenery raises it's ugly head all too often making stealth a nuisance rather than an assistance. Most frustrating of all was the crazy 'weapon change' system. Rather than rapidly switching guns by a quick flick of a button, you must instead hold down the triangle (or whichever button you allocate), while jointly using the directional pad to scroll through a small on-screen menu. This becomes very clumsy, especially when completely out of ammo or slap-bang in the middle of a raging gunfight. Finally there is the length of the game. With no secret areas to reveal Tomorrow Never Dies will probably be gathering dust after barely a few days play, if that.

Staff Opinions
Adam  "After ploughing through the first few missions I realized that I wasn't getting much fun out of this. Perhaps it was just as well that the entire game could be complete in barely a day or two's play. Tomorrow Never Dies? Well the game did."
