Setting the Scene:

"Take me out to the ball game. Protect me please from the crowd. Buy me some $10 peanuts and cracker jacks. I don't care that we can't afford to get back…" I could go on but you get the picture. Going out to watch a baseball game these days can be exorbitantly expensive when you factor in the cost of a ticket, refreshments, parking and the gas to get there. While I am not saying that you should never go to a live baseball event (there's nothing quite like it!), us gamers do have an alternative. Enter stage left…Triple Play 2001.

Sound and Vision:

"Holy Cow!" the sound effects are brilliant. From the announcer's voice to the color commentary...From the crowd's overall participation to the ambient background noises, TP 2001 successfully recreates the sounds of being there at the game. As soon as you hear the crack of that wooden bat you just know you are going to be experiencing a fine sounding baseball title. TP2001 is just littered with nice little sound effect touches to virtually cover the feel of being in a baseball park during a game. About the only thing that I didn't much enjoy was the distracting musical cuts that played just before a batter connects with the ball. I know real stadiums feature this as well, but after a while it just got annoying to me.

The graphics are about the best you are likely to see in a baseball title on the Playstation for the remainder of its life. I just can't imagine anyone squeezing out something that looks better overall. The character models are very nicely detailed with many new texture maps to match some of the bigger names in the game. Sizes are for the most part accurately represented and the animation is at an all time high. Thankfully it appears that the choppiness and frame drops of past TP games have been left in the dust.

The stadiums are also beautifully recreated with the exception of the crowd, which is the usual blurry smear of colors that we have become accustomed to on the PSX. Other than that though, all of the stadium animations appear to be present like the rising apple at Shea, the waterfalls at BankOne and the various projection screens throughout the league.

Overall the presentation piece of TP2001 is pure EA Sports…meaning it's totally phat!
