Ever
wonder exactly what it is that worms do when they are not being used as fish
bait? Nah, me either, but I found out what it is ...They wage all out war on
each other! WORMS is one of those rare titles that actually concentrates on the
"gameplay" aspect of the game rather then trying to wow you with
flashy graphics. The object is to form a team of tiny worms and see if you can
blow away the other team before they get you! You are given a wide variety of
weapons to do this with. They range from the always handy shotgun to the less
subtle airstrike. There are also different items you can use to assist you in
getting around...Ninja ropes, bungi cords and jack hammers just to name a few.
The comic relief this game provides has few peers in the video game world. Grab
a few friends, knock back a few beers and blow each other away! Ah...life is
good...

Well,
the graphics will certainly not knock your socks off, especially compared to
what you know your Playstation can do. In fact, the graphics in this game could
probably have been done on a SNES system with a few less colours. But the
graphics, while being relatively simple, are perfect for this game. There are
different worm mounds generated each time you load a game with various "themes"
like the beach, space, hell, woods, wastelands, etc. There is also some pretty
slick parrallex scrolling going on in the background just to make things
interesting. The worms could have been a bit bigger, but why nitpick...the game
is so damn much fun I would play it in black & white if I had to. There is
some really funny details that have been included. When you use the blow torch
you can see the flame pack and torch on the little worm and also see it pulling
a visor over his head when he lights it up. When you transport, the worm pulls
out and open it's transporter device. It's this attention to details that
follow the game throughout. The cut FMV scenes are also a riot and are
extreemly high quality.

Totally
fits the game. The worm sounds, while sometimes are a little hard to
understand, are hilarious! When you accidentally waste one of your own worms
for example, he yells "traitor" at you in a high pitched
voice...Background and missle/weapons sounds are done to perfection. The music
is great too and really sets to tone for the game...All of the sounds and music
work just right.

When
playing with friends this game can't be beat, it's even fun against the
computer. Each game a random landscape is generated that you can choose to play
or have the computer generate another. Each random screen is assigned a code
number that you can save if you would like to play that screen again. There can
be literally billions of different landscapes, so if you like one write down the
code or you may never see it again! WORMS is a true masterpiece of gameplaying
execution (pun intended)! You haven't lived until you sneak up on a poor little
worm buddy, drop a stick of dynamite, listen to the worm yell "hehehe"
and watch your friends worm blow to pieces...The game has it all...group
participation, easy learning curve but tons of strategies, endless scenarios,
lots of weapons and options, stat keeping...the list goes on. Let me put it
this way, if you like the idea of using gooey little worms to wage war against
your friends you should grab this game...

As
you can tell by this review, I really enjoy playing this game. I have to admit,
I am easily lured by the flashy graphics in a game, but was pleasantly suprised
to find that I was able to "look past" the simple graphics and enjoy
this game for what it is...jeese, I hope I'm not starting to grow up. Believe
me, everything in this game "feels" just right. WORMS is destined to
become a classic...

Some
games on the PSX are about graphics and sound effects. Worms on the other hand
is about pure unadulterated gameplay. Brilliant. |
