Guide to Grand Theft Auto Liberty City Stories on the PlayStation 2
Times are bad in Liberty City and it will take the ruthless ambition of a hardened man to set things right. That man is Toni Cipriani. Toni's been gone from Liberty City. He had to lay low for killing a made man. But the time has come for Toni to return and take his rightful place in the Leone crime family. The streets of Liberty City are up for grabs as a mob war threatens to tear the city apart. In a place once voted "the least likely place to succeed in America", Toni Cipriani is about to prove them all wrong in the latest installment of Grand Theft Auto - Liberty City Stories.
The Grand Theft Auto series is a crime filled, mission based adventure for mature gamers that is part third person shooter but also incorporates elements of racing and chasing. Developed by Rockstar games, Grand Theft Auto is one of the most popular series ever made. Gameplay revolves around criminal missions throughout the city where stealing vehicles is often a main objective. Law enforcement is a constant threat as you try to avoid arrest while committing your crimes. You have various weapons at your disposal to help you combat the law and other threats you'll encounter. Characters throughout the game offer missions which you must complete to advance your criminal career. The rewards for completing missions and committing crimes is usually cash which you can then use to buy weapons and assets. Advancing your criminal status and acquiring wealth will help you build your criminal empire. It's all about being the bad guy in Grand Theft Auto. Blood and gore, intense violence, strong language, sexual content and the use of drugs justifies the ESRB mature rating.
Originally developed for the PSP and later ported to the PS2, Liberty City Stories takes us back to Liberty City a few years before the events in Grand Theft Auto III. Salvatore Leone, the mafioso Don of the Leone crime family has brought Toni Cipriani back to Liberty City. The Leone crime family is at war with rival mob families and Toni is a man who can get things done. Under the initial direction of Capo Vincenzo Cilli, Toni sets about moving his way up in the world of organized crime.
Dealing death to rival criminal organizations to establish the Leone crime family as the ruling faction in Liberty City is the recurring theme in Liberty City Stories. To do this Toni must face off against numerous gangs including the Forelli and the Sindacco families, the Triads, the Yakuza, and some Columbians. You'll disrupt operations and destroy their assets while defending the Leone family interests. With drug dealing part of your criminal empire, Toni has to watch over shipments and handle street dealers. Political corruption is rife in Liberty City and part of your job is to influence government. You'll pay off union officials to garner their favors then rattle their cages when they try to play hard ball. The mayor of Liberty City is in bed with the enemy and assassination is just your business. With his office vacant and rigged elections looming, you must do what it takes to see your man elected. There are many more things you will do for the family, these are just a taste of what is in store.
Liberty City is full of interesting characters and as Toni meets them he will do different tasks. Salvatore Leone (voiced by Frank Vincent of Sopranos fame) is the principal character Toni takes orders from and could be the only one Toni respects. He'll do anything out of loyalty to his mentor Don Salvatore that one day will earn him a position of honor. Vincenzo Cilli stands in his way as the Capo that Toni does not respect. There's JD O'Toole, a sleazy sex club owner who is double crossing the Sindaccos and Maria Latore is one of Salvatore's women whose excessive drug usage and outrageous behavior tries Toni's patience. Donald Love is a business tycoon and a deviant that Toni must work for and help get elected. But the strangest relationship has to be with Ma Cipriani, Toni's own mother. She is never satisfied with Toni's achievements and goes so far as to hire hitmen to rub out her own son. There are many more people that Toni will meet as rises in rank through the Leone crime family.
The side missions, one of Grand Theft Auto's staples, are back in full force. Taxi, vigilante, street races, ambulance and rampages are just a few examples of the standards. Some of the new additions include Trash Dash, picking up dumpsters with a garbage truck, Car & Bike Salesman where you take prospective buyers for rides, and Sight Before Flight, a tourist sight seeing photo mission. The vehicles are standard Grand Theft Auto fare but the addition of motorcycles to Liberty City adds a new dimension to the old layout. Players familiar with Liberty City from Grand Theft Auto III know that motorcycles were not present in that game. The explanation for that lies in a protest group know as A.R.S.E. (American Road Safety for Everybody) that eventually had motorcycles banned from Liberty City. You will also notice the tunnel is still under construction so a ferry system was included.
The airwaves are again alive with the radio stations Grand Theft Auto fans have come to expect. The choices of music range from rap to funk to classical and more. How often can you hear DMX and Mozart in the same game? The always hilarious satirical talk radio is back, including favorite radio personality Lazlow. Major news events in the city, of which you have usually caused, are frequently broadcast over the air.
Since this game was originally developed for the PSP, the graphics are not exceptional but they are adequate. The draw distance and the frequency of the random pedestrian population were both increased for the PS2 version. The dual analog controls also make the PS2 version easier on the handling during gameplay. Unfortunately, the multiplayer missions available in the PSP version are not included in the PS2 version but the bottom line is this is a Grand Theft Auto title. All the things we've come to love and appreciate about the series are evident. The compelling storyline, developed characters, superior voice acting, excellent soundtrack, the diverse range of missions and the freedom to roam throughout the game mark the qualities of Grand Theft Auto Liberty City Stories.
