Guide to Half Life on the PlayStation 2

Half-Life follows the adventures of unlikely hero Gordon Freeman. An employee of M.I.T’s top-secret weapons research department, Freeman finds himself caught up in the middle of an alien invasion. Grabbing whatever weapons come to hand, guide Gordon as he picks his way through his shattered office and eventually takes the fight to the alien invaders – uncovering a worrying conspiracy in the process...

Anyone who has a PC at home has very likely heard of Half-Life as it is widely acclaimed as the best first person shooter ever created. Its success lay partly in the fact that when it was released in the mid-90’s it was one of the few games that neither required a powerful computer or an expensive graphics card in order to fully enjoy the experience.

Over the years the core software (engine) that runs the game has been incorporated into some other blockbuster titles. Possibly the best known adaptation of Half-Life is the awesome counter-strike which is one of the most enjoyable online shooters played by thousands of gamers every day.

Okay, so enough of the hero worship, lets face it… this is a very old game and it’s a bit like a remake of a classic movie, in that its rare to create the same impact the second time around.

Gearbox have promised a conversion that builds upon the amazing gameplay of the PC release, and adds a wealth of elements exclusive to the Sony version.

All-new AI ensures the aliens react in believable ways, while the new ‘Decay’ co-operative mode lets two players work together to repel the alien menace. Half-Life for PlayStation 2 will also boast 12 exclusive ‘Death Match’ stages, wherein up to four players can compete in a series of ‘last man standing’ battles.

My two worries about this title are that its core engine is heavily reliant on texture memory (something that the PS2 has in short supply) and how they will adapt the accurate shooting system that’s possible with a PC mouse, to the analog joypad… god knows, if they dumb it down as much as was done in Red Faction it would be a crying shame.

The major plus it has over games like Unreal and Quake is that it was originally programmed with a bias to a single player game rather than as a multi-player deathmatch event that’s more suited to internet gamplay.

Our advice is to hold back until you read the reviews… this one could go either way.
