issues playing gauntlet on ps2 silver edition

I bought gauntlet dark legacy for my son. He has a playstation 2 silver edition. I can't figure out why it won't play. It plays other games just fine that are in worse condition than gauntlet. Does anyone else have this issue and what can I do?
