What we're really talking about is the nature verses nurture debate that still gets psychologists going whenever it comes up. Is it the environment around you as you grow up (nurture) or is it an inbuilt instinct or genetic predisposition (nature)? As for the answer, there are very convincing arguements put forward by both sides. There have been reports of a 'gay' gene that increases the chances of an individual finding members of the same sex more sexually attractive. Given how little we really know about the human genome, completion of the project aside, it would be impossible to write off that explanation at the current time. I, for one, tend to believe that it is probably a combination of both that effects our behaviour, there is certainly evidence that some psychological traits have a genetic basis (schizophrenia in twins is far more common than most people realise) but we can be taught almost anything. At the end of the day whether it is truely an individual's choice, the way I voted if it means anything, or something they were born predisposed too it makes no difference. Provided you are happy and cause no harm to anyone then how you get your jollies is your own business. ENJOY. If, however, you do cause others harm then any comeback you recieve is well deserved. The only problem with that is what it can do for general perceptions of others who do not share your predilictions. If by your actions you affect those perceptions in a negative way then you are harming even more people than your original act harmed, this often creates a vicious circle which furthers the prejudice of the uninformed or biggoted who find they have another cause to fight for.
