This is a highly open-ended question regarding censorship within videogames. What is your take on the situation? Do you feel that controversial scenes should remain in the games, unchanged, and that you should have the right to choose whether you play the game or watch the scene? As many around the forums, i am a huge fan of RPGs and with February being a big month for RPGs, the release of Xenosaga still looks just as sweet to me as ever. Now, what does this have to do with censorship you're probably asking yourself now. Ok, i'll be blunt, Xenosaga is edited from the Japanese version. The game overall is only 5 minutes shorter than the Japanese version but it's all useless dialogue that was taken out there. The edits where mostly done by changing the camera angle and deleting or moving objects. So, what happened that was needed to be edited? MOMO, who while also being a playable character is an android that was fashioned to resemble a 13 year old girl. While a "relationship" between her and another character named Jr. is hinted at but the exact details on that will have to be found out in the game. Now, that was just random info on the character but the scene in question has one of the characters(i'm not sure who) violates MOMO's "personal space" and though nothing important has been removed, it still bothers me that games are still being censored. Another of the censored scenes involves a flashback sequence in which someone's(hey, i've played as much of the game as others who don't do reviews) arm is broken. In the scene the arm is visually scene snapping, but in the US version, the camera happens to "miss" the action. Again, nothing important but as much as they add other elements to other games(or other forms of entertainment even), you'd think a little added shock value in a game such as this would be welcomed. To bring together my thoughts, i don't feel that games should be censored but knowing that Namco wanted to keep within a Teen rating while keeping as much Blood, Gore, Violence and other aspects as possible, i understand their actions though i don't like them for it. I enjoyed Xenogears due to it's huge amount of superliminal messages about just about everything controversial and the fact that it was made into a great game(though the last disk could have been done better). So, now we all know that i dislike censorship in videogames. I think everyone should see what the game's director thought that we should see, even if the parts seem to be unimportant on the outside. What are your feelings on this subject? Do you agree with me or do you think that i should be taken out back into the alley and beaten within an inch of my life(in which case i guess it would have to be censored since we all would know how you felt)? This is your place to speak out on your feelings about censorship(if you couldn't tell). In closing i would just like to make a statement, i don't think that anyone younger than the game's rating level allows for should be left to their own conventions when it comes to choosing what is and isn't good for them. In the last case i feel it should be left upto the gaurdian as to whether the child should play such titles or not. Well, i hope that you all enjoy posting and have fun gaming.
