Hotshots Golf 3
Review of Hotshots Golf 3
This is Arcade GOLF at its best…HOTSHOT STYLE. Exercise your golf strategies at the most exotic courses. Play with the craziest golfers and contend with the wackiest Caddies. Is it possible to score a hole in one in fishnets and high heels? In the HSG world you can, so look out “TIGER” make way for one of the best golf games made for the Playstation console!
HSG3’s options offer plenty of variety, right from the beginning. Starting off, the player can choose single player, short course (9 holes verses 18), or multiplayer golf. Multiplayer golf can be played with up to 4 players, with or without a multi-tap. Let me explain, up to 4 players could share a controller or you could setup 4 players with 4 different controllers. I thought this was a cool option. Now choose a character only a few are available initially. Playing and winning in the VS mode will win access to additional characters. I thought the characters were pretty unique and do not come off as your normal GOLF PRO. The females sport around in low-cut mini dresses, fishnets and high heels. Some of the male golfers are gruff and sloppy looking sporting 5 o’clock shadows and suspenders. If you happened to get bored with your favorite golfers attire you can even change their clothes depending on your mood. Each golfer also has their own personality with different strengths and weaknesses including power, control, impact spin and trajectory. If by chance you are a switch hitter or southpaw and want to play lefty, there is the capability to do so. That is what I call “VARIETY”.
Gameplay has a lot to offer as well. Golf the most challenging and beautiful courses set in US, Japan, and Scotland. Play in the season of your liking…rain or snow? Pick a caddie that will be by your side thru the good and bad. Don’t be surprised if they go out of their way to rattle your cage because they will…at times I just wanted to hit them with my club, too bad the game doesn’t give the player that option to smack the caddie around, that would be awesome!
The controls are simple and as easy as 1, 2, 3. Hitting the X button 3 times will result in hitting the ball. Hitting X the first time will start the swing meter. The second X will measure the strength of the swing, and timing the third X just right will almost guarantee a nice hit. Finding the SWEET SPOT (no…not the G Spot) is the key. Surprisingly, HSG3 closely resembles real life golf, even down to picking the correct club for perfect distance. The wind and rain can also influence the outcome of your shot as well as hills and rough terrain. The challenge, just like actual golf, is really the short game. This is where finesse comes in. Putting is just as hard in HSG3 as it is on the golf course. The bottom line is, practice a little, do well….. and win extras like new gear like clubs, balls, etc.
Graphically speaking, the game is filled with vibrant backgrounds and interesting characters. The golfers are nicely modeled with lots of details and smooth edges. The shadowing effects of the golf ball, flags, characters, and obstacles on the courses are done perfectly. All the characters appearances seem to match their personalities flawlessly. The funny thing is they don’t look like “real golfers”. Their apparel as well as their attitudes is not considered good GOLF ETIQUETTE! But who cares, that’s what makes HSG3 interesting and fun to play. I always hated Golf attire anyway. It is so YUPPY. Anyway, the golf courses are very pretty with perfectly manicured grass fairways, shimmering water, lots of sand traps, trees, and other hazards.
The Sound was probably my least favorite part of the game. The commentary is very repetitive which I found annoying. There is really no soundtrack to speak of. On the flip side, the sound effects were decent. You will hear the ball plopping into the water, club to ball contact, birds chirping, wind blowing, crowds cheering, crickets and water running in the background. The caddies make stupid remarks like SO UNCOOL, HELLO..HELLO (like a freaking parrot). So I just turned the sound down and played on.
