Guide to Hot Shots Tennis on the PlayStation 2

Game developers Clap Hanz have made a name for themselves with the Hot Shots Golf series on the PlayStation line of systems with 6 games to their credit (including the upcoming Hot Shots Golf 5). Looking to do something a bit different, they put away the golf clubs and picked the game of tennis to give their unique spin. The result is Hot Shots Tennis for the PlayStation 2.

One of the standards of the Hot Shots games has been the unique characters and this game is full of them. Sporting 14 playable characters in all, each with their own particular skills, one should be able to find a favourite to play as. You start off with just the two and must unlock the rest. Players will find an array of equipment and other items to unlock such as clothing to make your player uniquely your own. Five umpires are unlockable as well and each have their own special personality.

Something else also considered as the norm for the Hot Shots games is the variety in playing fields. A total of 11 different courts are in the game, ranging in locations from regular courts, the old west, the beach and ancient ruins.

There is a variety of playing modes available from Training to the single player Challenge mode, which sees players try to rise to the top ranks by defeating the other characters. Multiplayer is also available with head-to-head matchups and doubles competition for up to 4 players. Gameplay looks ready to accommodate everyone from beginner to seasoned vet with a control scheme that can accommodate “pick up and play” for the casual gamers yet also emphasize shot direction and speed for the advanced players.

This game seems to be a good one to pick up for those looking for something a bit different. We’ll let you know our final opinion soon when we have the review.
