Guide to Mortal Kombat Armageddon on the PlayStation 2

Armageddon is nigh and the fate of the realms is in the hands of one man. A bloody battle has begun, pitting brother against brother for the right to claim the ultimate prize. Forces of darkness have joined together to assure that evil will win. There is only Taven to stand in their way. As combatants are seduced by the allure of ultimate power, their mere presence threatens to tear the world apart.

The game that has defined the fighting genre in video games is back for another round. Armageddon is the ultimate Mortal Kombat experience. For the first time, every Mortal Kombat character in history is available in one game, making Armageddon the most comprehensive game ever in franchise history. With Kombat, Kreate A Fighter, Konquest, Motor Kombat, MK Online modes and tons of extras, Armageddon is packed with content.

Mortal Kombat Armageddon is a 3-D fighting game from Midway. Facing off against opponents in various battle arenas in a best of three match is the main focus of the game. Over 60 playable characters are available, each with their own style, techniques and special moves. With interactive environments that are equally treacherous, every fight is a unique challenge.

Kombat offers the classic versus battle. Your player against one foe. This can be either single player versus computer or 2 players head to head. Kombat offers either the arcade version, versus or practice mode. Arcade is tournament style facing off against progressively harder random opponents. Versus is for playing against 2nd player. Practice mode allows for individual fights to practice your skills as or against a specific character.

Kreate A Fighter feature is new to Mortal Kombat. Users can create their own unique fighter with fully customizable traits. Appearance can be modified including gender, size, build, hair, eye and skin color, clothing and accessories from head to toe. Fighting and weapon style are customizable from basics to attacks. Specific moves can all be assigned to button sequences of your choice including special moves or attacks. You can even change the tone of voice and victory celebrations. Once you've created a custom fighter, it can be used in Kombat or MK Online.

Konquest mode is an adventure story through the Mortal Kombat Universe where you play as Taven. Combining story elements with action fight sequences and one on one battles, you journey towards the ultimate prize. This introduces you to many of the Mortal Kombat characters, most of which you'll end up facing in battle. Along the way you'll collect treasures, including Koins, relics and armor. Koins can be used to unlock extra content or to purchase Kreate A Fighter moves and costumes. Relics will unlock alternative costumes, characters and locations. Special treasures include Elder God Armor to be used in Kreate A Fighter mode.

Motor Kombat is a racing game where you control one of eight characters in a race. With specialized cars and various track layouts, you'll compete in races for fun and Koins. Each track is unique in style and shape with power items and koins to collect as you race around the track. Special attacks can be used to slow down other racers or bump them off the track.

MK Online allows you to connect to the internet to compete against other players online. In order to access Mortal Kombat Armageddon online mode, you will need a network adaptor (Ethernet/modem)(for Playstation 2), a memory card, and a broadband connection to the internet from an internet service provider (ISP). Once online, you can join or create rooms to do battle, find players or friends, view profiles and leaderboards or check out news and updates.

The Krypt is where you will find unlockable content. The Krypt has walls with hundreds of tablets, which can be purchased using Koins collected in the game. The unlockable features include koncept art, media items and game content. Over 250 items are available to unlock.

A profile viewer allows you to create new player profiles and to track your game stats. Each profile allows you to create your own security code to protect unauthorized use. The game disc also has some extra features including upcoming game trailers. One feature is Stranglehold, directed by John Woo and starring Chow Yun Fat. The other is SpyHunter - Nowhere To Run, which is narrated by voice talent The Rock.

Control during gameplay consists of specific button sequences to initiate attacks. These include a huge variety of punches, kicks, leg sweeps, weapon attacks and defensive moves. There are also special moves that can be performed while in air, adding to the range of attacks. Characters with weapons can employ their weapons at will or choose to fight without. Some arenas also have weapons for use. In some cases, the arena itself is a weapon, if properly executed. These include chopping fans, subway cars, crushing rollers, fire pits and falls from heights to name a few.

Graphics are solid including meticulous animation of the hundreds of fighting moves. The battle environments are unique and interactive, including destructible items and dangerous pitfalls. The characters are diverse in appearance and highly detailed. Special effects during fight sequences are impressive and add flair to special power moves. Blood and gore effects also add to the brutality of fight sequences, especially during fatalities.

Sound is adequate for a game of this type. Special effects are delivered on time. Voice acting during the Konquest mode is average. Most characters seem stoic or unaffected. Of course, the classic Mortal Kombat fight sequences voicing is back, including the famous "Finish him" line.

Overall, Mortal Kombat Armageddon delivers on the fighting experience. With all the classic characters from Mortal Kombat history available, all your favorites are ready to fight. There are dozens of fight moves and combos to master, making destroying your opponent different every time. With multiple modes of play and online capability, this game has excellent replay value. Rated M for Mature this game is for adults.
