Sounds like your system is in need of repair, deadrising. It could be the contacts on the buttons are getting bad. I would suggest giving the sony tech line a call. The number for your area can be found in the system manual or any game manual.
BTW, you shouldn't have to shut the power off in the back unless you're moving the system- you could have left it in sleep mode.
